I’ve gone for 69-70, I am old enough to have been at all the home games and most of the always that season. The football was breathtaking, to this day I’ve never seen anything quite like it from an English club side. It’s just a shame that we hadn’t won anything in the two preceding seasons, the team, believe it or not actually peaked in the 68-69 season, but, somehow managed to finish that season without a trophy. We won the league in the most wonderful fashion in 69-70, but sadly, that magnificent side was coming to the end of the line. It was three fabulous years from that team and they could and should have won more than a solitary league title.

The team of the eighties was a different matter, they were a great team who peaked just at the right time to give them several seasons of trophies. For absolute, ‘raise the hair on the back of your neck’ brilliance, they just weren’t quite as good as the trinity team , or as Joe Royle jokingly referred to them the only 3 man team to win the league. It has to be said though, the 80’s team would have been far tougher to play against, the spirit was great and there were some right battlers in that squad.

I guess it’s all down to opinion and I’d say that somebody 10 years younger than me would have chosen the 80’s side, but for me, back in 1970 I was a young man making my way in the world, life was great and so were my football team. Happy happy days.

I suppose it all depends on the definition of better?
I’m one of the lucky ones, I was only 10 when I watched us win the league v West Brom in 1970 so admittedly memories fade slightly! The 69-70 team was a joy to watch, and the Holy Trinity were called that for a reason. They were a cracking footballing team, but had one or two in there who could mix it up if required!
The 84-85 team grew together over the previous couple of years, but the Reid and Gray transfers added something special, then they won the cup! In 84-85 they were truly exceptional, if teams tried to outplay them they couldn’t, if teams tried to bully them they couldn’t, and similiar to the 69-70 team they played some great football at times backed up by the worlds best goalie!
I genuinely honestly don’t know who would win if they were in some sort of weird time warp and could play each other at their peak, my heart probably would say the 69-70 team, my head the 84-85 team because they never gave in and never knew when they were beaten!
Was an “honour” to watch them both!

P.S Haven’t cast a vote as it’s too difficult to choose!

Different eras and teams, both brilliant in their way. Oppositions were different.

Could not possibly vote on who was better. Seen both.

I didn't see them mate, only archive clips and the like.
You missed a treat Lou, I used to love going to watch them, magic week after week, I loved going to watch the 80’s side as well, but, for me, it just wasn’t quite the same. Probably an age thing, I was a young fella just getting used to having a job and some cash in my pocket, down to London for the aways, same old crew at all the games and oh the football magic.

You have to feel sorry for our fans who have had to put up with the crap over the years and never got to see the great Everton teams mate. Fingers crossed their time will come in the future.

Back then in the 60s and 70s cameras were rubbish,

PS Lou, Roy Vernon was the best ever spot kicker.
Roy was captain back in 1962-63 when my big brother started taking me to the match, wasn’t I lucky a league title in my first match going season, what a striker of a football he was. He banged in some goals in the first few seasons I went to the match.

Only saw the 84 side - was young at the time so just thought they were awesome. Only appreciated in hindsight what a rare winning mentality they had, not something you see very often in any team sport. More skill, more desire, more balloches than anyone, built on a generation talent goalkeeper.

You know how we've played for the last 7 or 8 years? The opposite of that.

Some of the pitches they had to play on as well, imagine the Prima Donna's in todays game playing in those conditions, the amount of whinging would be huge.
By November, they had put so much sand in the penalty areas to help the water drain away through the mud, you could have been forgiven for thinking that were playing on Ainsdale beach. It used to always strike me as funny that in August, we had this lovely green manicured pitch and by November there were just 2 green stripes about 5 yards wide along the touchlines, the rest of the pitch was a lovely shade of mud brown.
