The thought just struck me.... would the 69/70 team have managed to beat Bayern and then actually win the ECWC?

They had great disappointment in their European outings although I was only a nipper at the time.

Never forget that night against Bayern. I think it was voted on here a few years ago as the greatest night at GP in our history. How the hell I managed to make the Dublin ferry at 10.15 is still a mystery to me 36 years later!!!
Who knows, European football wasn't as important to the English teams in those days, the league and the FA Cup were the be all and end all. It was only really in the 70's that Europe began to take precedence.

Had some great European nights in the 80's, as you say Bayern was the one.
Having said that I did see the 62-63 champions play Inter Milan off the park at Goodison and be robbed by the ref. He disallowed a perfectly good Vernon goal. It came out later that the Italian teams in the 60's were well known for bribing officials.

Yes Indeed. I have often read about that.

I just remember being in the Street End at ht that night and things were not going well yet there was a determination.

As the late great HK said, we sucked the goals in!

Btw. If you watch footage of the teams coming out at the start of the match, you will see a tricolour being proudly waved in the Street End.

Nothing political, these were the days of the Celtic/Everton woolly hats.

That, I am proud to relate was me!!

Ironically, the same flag was temporarily impounded by our own Gardai before Rovers played Linfield in the European Cup at Milltown in 1984.

I had to call to the cop shop in Donnybrook after the game to collect it!!

No issues at GP a year later :-)

Just watched some highlights of Bayern again.

Now Martin Tyler I find painful these days, but in fairness he made a great comment. "Everton rolled up their sleeves for the second half".

That and the crowd won it that night.

Btw after the 2nd goal my flag is clearly visible :-)

The team back then in 70s played Inter Milan in the EC. We scored thanks to Vernon but following protests the ref disallowed it. Same ref at the San Siro when they won 1-0 thanks to the same ref. Came years later he had been bribed as I recall. Harvey debuted in that game.
AT GP I was in GSE in which end the goal was scored. Attendance was well over 70K

It's a generation thing for me. The 60's teams were my dad's teams.
He'll go on all day about the Holy Trinity or the 66 World Cup games if you let him (which tbf, I do)
I was 15 in 84, so the 80's team are my heroes
Either way, both of us got lucky and spoiled with those Everton teams, chock full of winners and leaders.
Nearly 30 years of 'Everton that' and crap since then to stomach but neither of us would have it any other way

I think the 70s team were better on the eye but the 85 team would have beaten them as the 85 team had more resilience and never knew when they were beaten.
In many ways the 70s side had just about peaked as in the previous 2 years they were better than the championship side where as in 85 they hadn't reached there full potential.
Both sides suffered at the hands of the cult and the semi at old Trafford 1971 and Wembley 86 broke my heart twice as we were the better team on both occasions but lost.

It's a photo finish / dead heat we need a tiebreak.
So we leave racing terms and go to snooker - bear with me
69-70 would score more 147s
84-85 would win more of the tight frames, the 58-52 black ball frames.
So I score it 29 frames to 28 in favour of 84-85...as they hated to lose a bit more

But.

Given the keys to the De Lorean, who would I go and watch?
tbh, 68-69 the football was out of this world,
Then 69-70 who gained a slightly more pragmatic edge and still played teams off the park.

When City start slinging the ball about without seeming to look...and it gets there, like over the last 3 or 4 seasons is as near as you'll see to that late 60s teams - they were that good.
Both squads made us proud to be Evertonians but I go,along with Degsy that the 1970 squad win it by virtue of, to me, being better to watch but as ever it is all about opinions.
