Yep I know my old fella has told me the stuff we played in 1968-69 was even better than 1969-70,but we ground out a few more points in the title year!!
I recall The Catt responding to the line relating to missing out on the record number of points gained in one season with a quip to a bemused reporter, " I'll let you keep the trophy they give for that".
I also think, but not 100%, that with 2 points for a win in those days, if equated to the 'Invincible Arsenal' record breaking year under Whinger, the Gunners points tally would have been one less than Everton gained in 1969/70.
To me, that puts plenty into perspective.

As we approached the end of 1969 I read an article whereby various people in football were asked could Everton possibly carry on and win the league. It was a measure of our standing that unanimously they said we were champions elect even with half the season to go. I think we were only three points ahead of second place. Bleeding hell nowadays I break into a sweat if we go into injury time with a three goal lead in case we balls it up.

I think the Vernon game was 1963 and we were also screwed against Milan in 1975, this time by an East German ref.

Bingham wrote that he was close to calling the players off the field as he knew there was no way we could win fair and square with the corruption that was evident.

Mind you Bingham didn't cover himself in glory when managing NI against Ireland as he openly encouraged the vile sectarian chants.

This in the middle of the conflict, and following some sickening sectarian atrocities.

I stand corrected, yes it was '63. Quite right about the '75 game we were done. back then as I recall, bit old now though) the Italian clubs were upto to all kind of tricks.

Like your father @Dario Terracotta, I too saw all three great teams, and also have my own personal favourites.
My own opinion, and only an opinion mind, The 1970 team were a complete Rolls Royce of a unit, with a very healthy side-order of snide (although I think the football the two seasons prior to the title were even better).
I think that is what irks us arl gits more than anything being the fact it was allowed to break up so rapidly when, in fact, it should have dominated domestic and European football for a decade. The even more aggravating thing about that is the fact Everton should have been the team of the 70's, and not that gang of lying cheating murdering scumbags from across the park.

Heysal

Also,on the whole i think as a competitive league,it was much stronger back then, ourselves, man u,city,Leeds,Chelsea, spurs would all fancy their chances, even the likes of West ham,Stoke, west brom all were very decent with top class players.

….Colin Harvey was part of both and said the 1970 team were better. I suppose I can’t argue with that, although the mid-80s team were a terrific blend of quality and attitude.
One thing that should be said about the 1970 champions, is that the trinity as good as they were, and they were very very good, they were given lots of time and space to play by the unsung fourth member of theat midfield, Johnny Morrissey.

By God that lad put a shift in and he was frighteningly hard. Few people took a liberty twice when Moggsy was around.

The time when every team in Division 1 had a player of class and wasn't under pressure by the media to join other teams.

For me 1985 as I never really saw the 1970 team!!however my old man saw both and sides with the 1970 team although his personal favourites in royal blue were the 1962-63 team,Young,Vernon,Kay and the rest, apologies for throwing a spanner in the workslol
Well that was a great team as well. They were undefeated at Goodison that year. The teams of 1970 and 1985, are probably more celebrated i suppose. But the 1963 and 1987 teams are special as well.
