Agreed. Mine would be :- West, Coleman, Labone, Ratcliffe, Baines, Steven, Harvey,Kendall,Ball, Barkley and Joe Royle.

the current team hasn't won anything!!!!....

it didn't get past the 1/4 finals of the FA Cup, got knocked out of the league cup by a crap Fulham side.....and bottled it when the pressure came on the league for top 4......

all we saw this season was potential....we achieved nothing....apart from some condescending pats on the back from the media for "overachieving" again....we didn't overachieve this season, Liverpool did, we underachieved......if any of the current crop want to be associated with the greats of past trophy winning teams, then its time to step up.....Arsenal came 4th and won the FA Cup, that should have been us!....

Southall, Stevens, Labone, Ratcliffe, Baines, Steven, Harvey, Kendall, Ball, Gray and Royle does it for me from the choices offered.

G. West or N. Southall or T. Howard
T.Wright or G.Stevens or S.Coleman
J.Hurst or K.Ratcliffe or P.Jagielka
B.Labone or D.Mountfield or S.Distin
K.Newton or P.Van Den Hauwe or L.Baines
J.Husband or T.Steven or S.Pienaar
C.Harvey or P.Reid or J.McCarthy
H.Kendall or P.Bracewell or G.Barry
A.Ball or K.Sheedy or K.Mirallas
A.Whittle or A.Gray or R.Barkley
J.Royle or G.Sharpe or R.Lukaku

The choice is difficult. Maybe a best combined team is easier?

Southall

Coleman, Ratcliffe, Labone, Paddy VDH

Steven, Reid, Kendall, Sheedy

Barkley, Royle.

If you had put Ball in the right midfield picks I would have chosen him but I can't recall him playing on the left and even if he did, Sheeds is yer only man.

It's just a bit of whimsy....not meant to be taken too seriously.

The kind of thread to bridge the gap until the World Cup starts :)

OK.

Let me throw another line up into the mix, albeit with some overlaps.

Gordon West

Alex Parker

Brian Labone

Brian Harris

Mick Meagan

Alex Scott

Jimmy Gabriel

Roy Vernon

Johnny Morrissey

Alex Young

Tony Kay

That's the 1963 Champion team and I never saw them play as I was just a young boy at the time but my dad and my uncles came home from the match buzzing every week and I feel as if they were my team and all.

I tell you what...when those names are committed to print it looks an awesome line up and one which would be the equal of the classes of '70 and '85 IMO.

:)

Labone, Kay and Young walk into the combined side - 1963 side was superb. Vernon would be thereabouts. Many others were very good too.

Southall,
Stevens, Labone, Ratcliffe, Baines (but Keith Newton was one hell of a good player)
Ball, Kay, Reid, Sheedy
Sharp, Young

Although I saw the likes of Bobby Collins, Tommy Ring and Jimmy Harris this was the first team I remember watching week in, week out with the addition of Dennis Stevens and Thompson who came from Hearts with 'the Golden Vision'. Happy days.

I reckon this current team would wipe the floor with the 1970 one and beat the 85 one, but that's just because of technology, diet, new tactics etc.

Having said that, you've got to go by how good they were at the time compared to everyone else. Dixie Dean probably wouldn't get a game for Tranmere now.
Agreed on both parts. The current team would annihilate the team from the 60's and probably beat the team from the 80's quite comfortably. The pace the game is played at now is so completely different, and the levels of fitness SO much higher... the previous generations would be blowing out their a*ses after 30mins.

HOWEVER, you're also right in saying you can only measure a team against those around it, and obviously both our 60's and 80's sides were amazing and accomplished far more than our current side has.

Cheated a bit. Feel wrong leaving Harvey and Kendall out, but I can only go on what my old fella tells me about the first lot of players and Trevor Steven was one of the best I've seen play for us, I bloody loved Reidy back in the '80's, people talk about Brian Robson back then, but Reidy sh*t on him every time we played United, and Kevin Sheedy had the sweetest left foot I've ever seen.

Thought about Gray as he was fearless and was instrumental in that title winning side, but I think Barkley has the potential to be one of the best we've had.

Ultimately, though, this current side don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the other two.
