...Colin Harvey probably said it all in a conversation with Howard Kendall regarding comparisons between the 1970 and 1985 teams. Harvey said the class of '85 wouldn't even get close to the '70 side. I don't suppose anybody could argue with somebody as close to both squads as him.

I would. Southall undoubtably better than West ( he was great but no Southall), Trevor Steven was better than Jimmy Husband, and a place would have to be found for Ratcliffe at least.......

He is the greatest left back the club has ever had. Ffs Newton played a couple of games in 1970 and gets a mention and our World Cup winning FB doesn't..........New rules required here......

Indeed and indeed.

But the criteria as set out by the lid in the OP means he ain't eligible for inclusion....:p

G. West or N. Southall or T. Howard
T.Wright or G.Stevens or S.Coleman
J.Hurst or K.Ratcliffe or P.Jagielka
B.Labone or D.Mountfield or S.Distin
K.Newton or P.Van Den Hauwe or L.Baines
J.Husband or T.Steven or S.Pienaar
C.Harvey or P.Reid or J.McCarthy
H.Kendall or P.Bracewell or G.Barry
A.Ball or K.Sheedy or K.Mirallas
A.Whittle or A.Gray or R.Barkley
J.Royle or G.Sharpe or R.Lukaku

Some incredibly tough decisions in there though, made more difficult in that I only have old vids to go on for a few obviously.

...I think there will always be better players that come along in any era, so I suggest its better to compare the collective than individuals. I don't think many would argue that a Southall is better than a West, but the fact that a group of players was available and together at the same time is what matters.

I loved the 1969/70 team. The season was almost perfect. But it was a one season wonder and was woeful in 1970/71.

Howard Kendall's 80's teams were consistently good, even exceptional, and might have continued to thrive had history not taken a
different course.

...I have to say I don't necessarily share Harvey's view but it is interesting that he felt the 70 side was much superior to that of 85. Alan Ball was clearly a very special talent, but the irony is that Kendal & Harvey shared 1 international cap between them, albeit in an era where they were difficult to get. The 85 team was truly a collective where every single one of them trusted and had a belief in each other. I loved that you just expected them to win.

You have to remember England were the reigning world champions at this time and had a great pool of talent from teams such as Everton, along with Leeds, united, city, derby and arsenal had great teams. When u look at the players from that team we did well to have labone, Wilson and ball in the side.

I reckon this current team would wipe the floor with the 1970 one and beat the 85 one, but that's just because of technology, diet, new tactics etc.

Having said that, you've got to go by how good they were at the time compared to everyone else. Dixie Dean probably wouldn't get a game for Tranmere now.

Dixie Dean with modern day scientific methods applied would still be one of the best to ever play.

1969-70 / 1984-85 deadheat
1962-63 3rd
1986-87 4th

2013-14 comeback when you've won the title....but not the worst I've ever seen
