Everton Brands Appointment Confirmed

...you have said he should be sacked for signing injured players, yet you don’t include that in your ‘major criticisms’,

It’s a nonsense to say he should use his ‘persuasive powers’ to permanently move players on rather than send them on loan. He’d need the diplomacy of Henry Kissinger to get Mirallas, Bolasi and Ramirez to take significant wage cuts at this point in their contracts, never mind ‘persuading’ a buying club to buy either. Indeed, Brands should be congratulated for moving so many on.

He’s a major job undoing the Walsh/Koeman era.

Way too sensible.

Get in the bin.

That's fine. I'm just retaining the right to criticise an obvious fault that went uncorrected.

I don't see it as a fault. He had a big job on his hands and shipped players off the wage bill and brought in players in positions that obviously needed strengthening. The CF position with regards to Tosun was not nor should have been classed as an emergency as Tosun did ok last season therefore was not a priority. Now we can all see that Tosun is not prolific or done himself justice but not many predicted he would be as sterile as he is. Hindsight is a great thing and I feel Brands assessment along with Silvas with regards to strengthening has been excellent. We have January to possibly fill the void that is now apparent

How could you have thoiught a throwaway statenent like that was in all seriousness?

I did. And I wasn't alone in that assessment in the summer.

Nothing to do with hindsight, it;s to do with foresight.

I see @davek is giving this thread his full attention today.

I debated the strength of the window he had. I didn't demand for a month he be sacked. That's just a lazy caricature.

..I haven’t checked, Dave, but I was sure you repeatedly criticised him for signing injured players. I also. recall you saying he should be dismissed but if i have that wrong I apologise.

...as explained, joke: "he should be sacked for signing two injured players'.

Oh boy. Hyperbole along with irony really is dead.

Well, you ARE the foremost expert in lazy caricature...

We all know what you hoped for with Brands, thankfully wiser heads are in control.

Yes, I'm aware of that and I do recognise the challenges he had.

However, I refuse to accept that he cant be criticised at this stage. For me there's two major criticisms:

1/ He just tipped 7/8 players out the club to get them off / partly off the wage bill for a year rather than use his persuasive powers (presumably he has them in abundance) to get some of the more saleable assets sold last summer. That failure just stores up more headaches to next summer (bigger ones given they have less time on their contracts and will therefore fetch less).

2/ He is an ex-pro. He doesn;t just do the manager's bidding he evaluates abilities of a squad and moves to strengthen. However, he's looked at that pop gun attack bequeathed to Silva and not acted decisively to make it more potent. For me, it was obvious that the players we had were sorely lacking. Ok, he cant deal with every position in one window, but a goal scorer is pretty fundamental. And now we ALL agree that it is THE problem we have that needs fixing.

I'm not saying he's terrible. I'm just saying he's done ok but no cigar from me.
Everyone that is out on loan is one of three things.
1. young and has a future at the club but needs minutes to develop (Onyekuru, Robinson)
2. young ish and does not look like they have the quality to play in the prem. (Pennington, Garbutt)
3. old and does not have the quality to play in the prem. (Williams, Martina)

Yes it would have been better if the player with no future here were fully off the books but I don't see any real return for anyone on loan that we would want to sell other than Vlasic and Sandro and they are both young enough where it was worth seeing if getting consistent minutes would help them improve.
