Exclusive – Everton ARE title contenders, insists Gray
By Alex Varney (@LexVarney) | Tuesday, December 31, 2013

Andy Gray says Romelu Lukaku is right to claim that Everton are genuine title contenders.

The Merseyside club are sitting fourth in the table at the halfway stage of the season having been beaten just twice in 19 games, the lowest tally of defeats in the Premier League.

The fine form of Roberto Martinez’s men, who have already enjoyed victories over Chelsea and Manchester United this term, has led Lukaku to suggest the Blues should be considered serious challengers for the championship.

And former Everton striker Gray agrees with the Belgian hitman, telling the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “They [their title chances] are very realistic at the moment.

“My one worry for the rest of the league is Man City find their away form because, if they do find consistency away from home, they might blow everyone away but right now, from what I have seen 19 games in, Everton have got every right [to be considered title challengers].

“I am glad people are mentioning it. I like that Lukaku is saying ‘why not?'

“It is one of those strange years where five or six, maybe even seven teams in the Premier League will think halfway through the season ‘do you know what, if we get lucky, a couple of things go our way, we get a right decision here and there, we might just have a chance.'

“This might be a surprising year when one of the really big boys don’t win it.”

Interestingly, our last six form puts us second behind Man City.

Even more interesting is that if you take away our first three games, which unless I'm wrong pre date our summer signings, we sit third in the table only 1 point behind Man City and 2 points behind Arsenal.

Having said all that, I can't see us winning, but it bodes well for us finishing top 4 by the end of the season. Lets hope Roberto can pull some magic out of his sleeve with a couple of excellent signings this transfer window

we are still innit.

Really, any team that is within 5 points of the top with 10 games to go has a good shout at winning the title because once you get to that point the last team to blink, so to speak, wins it. We'll have a few bumps along the road but so will everyone, all we can do up to then is just keep getting wins on the board and make sure that when our backs are against the wall we can dig deep and get a result. Do that and take points off our rivals and who knows eh? Stranger things have happened

Citeh have a lot of tough away fixtures in the 2nd half.
I think Chelsea will somehow snatch it. They are right up there and not even firing on all cylinders, but Jose knows how to win titles in his sleep.

Its fantastic to be up there and mixing it. Just the fact that people have to factor us into the equation by dint of our points tally and table position at this stage means that they will have to take us more and more seriously the longer we remain in touching distance. Momentum is a massive thing - the longer we keep it going the better it'll be for us.

Need to beat Stoke today. Obvs. Otherwise these sort of threads start to look pretty silly pretty quickly.
