I don't think it is very smart to sell the most hight profile player now. With NBC picking up the broadcasting rights in the states, adding their sports channel to broadcast more games, and really pushing this product, the premiership is getting more exposure over here than ever. We get pretty regular highlights (at least of high profile matchups ) on ESPN these days...unheard of 2-3 years ago.
I suspect there is money to be made developing the fan base abroad, and losing a guy like Fellaini is not the way to do it. I saw somewhere that the most popular teams in the states are Tottenham (1) (because of Dempseys stay there, I assume) and Man U (2). I'll be honest, Fellaini and Baines are the main reason why I started following Everton. I just think he may be worth more than the transfer fee over the next few years of his contract. Very recognizable and fun as hell to watch.
That's an interesting perspective, and one I'd not really considered. Fellaini is iconic - perhaps the most recognisable player in the league for casual viewers. That's got to be good for our exposure.
