Anyone thats would have us miss out on champions league to stop liverpool winning the league is a liverpool hater not an Everton supporter. I honestly believe that we would get a lot further with Roberto in the champions league than we would have with our previous manager. Getting into the champions league would also give us an outside chance of getting Lukaku on a permanent deal.
And I could care less what that lot do unless it is against us.

There's loads of us that are Liverpool haters and Everton supporters. It's good to be like that, it's honest, and understandable.

I take your point about Martinez in the CL though, Moyes when he had his chance looked like a badger with TB in the headlights of an oncoming car.

to be honest i'd be tempted to have a beer with them if we've qualified for Champs League...talking excitedly about the season ahead (just hope we crack the qualifier this time).

The Goodison Chants thread is only on its second page, yet all these memorable chants are about the red team.

The subject of how much we do actually care about the red side has been a bone of contention in not just this thread, but these quotes hit home that the rivalry with Liverpool is a crucial part of the Evertonian Experience for many blues.

For me too, my first Everton connection was an FA Cup Final derby.

This perhaps makes it more understandable why almost 20% of us really would rather Liverpool fail than us succeed. It's a kind of brotherly rivalry which has got bitter after a huge fall-out (1985).

Not saying that these lads I'm quoting are part of the 20%, but I think there's a link in the thinking behind it:

The earliest one I can remember was (to the tune of Michael Row The Boat Ashore) "Send St John to Vietnam"... There's one that dates me...

Remember hearing in the very early seventies at a goodison derby the gwladys street chanting "Red and white *****,red and white *****,hello, hello" didn't understand it as I was that young and constantly pestering my old man as to what was the words,my old man told me it was,"Red and white shanks"oh well he was being a good dad I suppose, and I was only about five or six!!!

My 6 y.o. sang it on the way to school after going to the Derby this season.

My favourite was the one we used to sing in the spring of '85 and again two years later.

"Hand it o-ver,

hand it o-ver

Hand it over

Liv-er-pool....."

'koff Mcmahon......koff mcmahon" repeat repeat

If you watch Everton v Man U 1967 (on MOTD and other sources) you can hear "Kopites are G..." from the crowd. Great to know that one's been around for nearly 50 years (or more)

Oh, and 'we hate Bill Shankly and we hate St John.....' , goosepimples every time :)

Oh, Jimmy, Jimmy,
Jimmy, jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy,
Shithouse Case

Who's up little boys,
Who's up little boys,
Mark, Mark Lawrenson,
Mark, Mark Lawrenson

Oh Ian, Ian Rush,
has gone to Juventus,
And he won't play at Anfield any more (any more),

And we all think it's funny,
That Ian's took the money,
And he won't play at Anfield any more

Sadly, the song was rendered irrelevant quite quickly....

They could win the quadruple and I'd still take the 4th place. It's a bit annoying that they're having such a good season, but for me it's more because it's another team we have to overcome to get where we want to be.

It's not even that really - it's that I'd take a minor hit for Everton to prevent a major boost for them. I don't see 4th as that much of a success compared to a league title for them, not even close.

If we won the league or Champions League, I wouldn't swap that for Liverpool not winning the other one, for example. In fact, I wouldn't mind if Liverpool won the FA Cup if it meant us finishing 4th - but the league is just too hard a pill to swallow.

By the way, if this poll was Merseyside only, it'd be closer to 40/60, convinced of it. Geography, age etc. definitely plays a part in this. I can understand completely why the Americans and such aren't that bothered about Liverpool.

Champions League is our holy grail, we're never going to challenge for the title without more funds, funds that would be provided in part by champions league. So cutting your nose off to spite your face really.

To me 4th is HUGE! We've been waiting for this opportunity to come again for 10 years, and we've been bemoaning our lack of financial muscle since the dawn of the Premiership. Finishing 4th (and getting past the Qualifier) could change everything! Turning us into genuine title contenders within one season.

I think I agree with this.

I understand that. But to give a bad analogy, it'd be like the superhero getting the girl, whilst the enemy takes over the world. Sure, as a viewer or whatever you're happy the superhero got his personal objective, but you can't exactly ignore what the enemy has done!

An interesting question would be would you have an oligarch takeover if it meant Liverpool winning the league. I personally would as it's a game changer and I'd know we'd be looking at challenging them, but 4th wouldn't mean we'd be challenging them.

I think that's what it comes down to - I can't stomach the thought of them pulling away so much that we're no longer a threat. I enjoy the rivalry we have, and a league title for them would put them on a different level.

Actually not a terrible analogy. I like to imagine we'd be ruining her so much that we wouldn't notice the destruction our new overlords were wreaking, but it wouldn't be ideal I agree. We'll have to agree to disagree but I see what you're saying.

84 to 87 where my best years following Everton.
The greatest period in our history.
In that time they were Euro Champs, Lge Champs(2), F.A. and Lge Cup winners.
But it didnt matter one bit cus we were competing at the top table. (and im local so surrounded by them)
For us to have any chance of getting back to that, we'll need top 4 so I dont care what they do.

And here's the thing.

They were successful then as well but we barely noticed.

It hurts when they are going well but we are in the doldrums.

But when we are also going well you won't hardly think about the buggers.
