Everton recorded an impressive 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane to go top of the league -albeit after only two league games.

Goals from Joleon Lescott, Leon Osman and Alan Stubbs seen the Toffees rise to summit of the Premier League in an impressive display against a Tottenham side who have been tipped to fly high this season after several big signings this summer.

The first goal came from a trademark Arteta free-kick from wide on the right, which makeshift left-back Joleon Lescott rose to head home from 6 yards in front of the watching England manager Steve McLaren.

Tottenham threatened more after the initial shock of conceding an early goal, with the equaliser coming from an Anthony Gardner header after the Spurs centre-half found himself free in the six yard box from a in-swinging corner kick.

Everton broke back quickly, capitalising on a restless Spurs crowd as Leon Osman restored Evertons lead on 36 minutes.

After a good build up involving Osman, Anichebe and Arteta, Everton managed to grabbed a second after Anichebe held up the ball, laying off to the right for Arteta, who swung in another cross for Anichebe. The headed clearance was too weak and Osman was on hand to drill the ball home left-footed.

Osman drilled the ball past England keeper Paul Robinson.

Spurs, under pressure after a poor result at Sunderland on the opening weekend, valiantly tried to come back into the game, but Everton managed to knock in a third seconds before half-time with a thundering deflected free-kick from Alan Stubbs - cheekily helped by some handywork in the wall by Lee Carsley.

Spurs went into the tunnel to a chorus of boos, whilst Everton fans were delighted. The second half promised more goals, but a stout defensive performance from the defence, combining with a potent counter-attack, meant that Everton comfortably closed the game out despite scares from Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe.

In truth, Everton looked more likely to add to their tally late on with Andy Johnson having a great chance after excellent work from midfield maestro Mikel Arteta.

GrandOldTeams MOTM: Leon Osman.

we were very lucky tonight. that is a good tottenham side, and although im extatic with the win - i cannot look past the glaring problems.

Ok my assessment.

Howard - I thought he was too low down for their goal but more than redeemed himself with the Defoe save.

Hibbert - Needs to sort it out really, not too confident, but he was marginally better than Saturday

Stubbs - My MOM

Yobo - Good soldier, made some vital tackles

Lescott - Excellent again, not sure where Baines will fit in as a permanent left back here.

Neville - Marshalled well, and played a corking Beckham like ball to AJ late on.

Carlsey - Master of doing everything without looking like doing anything

Osman - Little gem again, took his goal well and interacted well with the little Maestro

Arteta - Quality as always, especially for an away game. Better attacking though, not as comfortable with his tackling.

AJ - Should have scored a couple with more composure, as Moyes says he needs to be more aggressive.

Anichebe - Worse Everton player on the pitch and looks totally out of his depth. I don't want to get on the boys back, but he needs to work on many areas of his game if he is going to be a serious contender for the second striker spot.

Jags - Needs games to up his fitness levels, but something about him made me feel assured that the game was ours.

Moyes - I thought he may have brought on Pienaar to try and hold the ball up with some trickery, but can't fault him really. Great tactician, surely now people have to admit he's a legend.

I'm sorry but what glaring problems are those? I think your being a little too negative for the sake of it. We have gone away to a good Spurs side, defended excellently and scored 3 goals. Its only football mate, beating the team in front of you and we did just that.

I disagree, in the first half i believe we were lucky that they didnt score in the 20 minutes of pressure, but our goals werent werent luck really, the first goal, great cross, the second, great finish, and the third, the power to get the ball that far is great...so it was us...

...the first half we deserved to be drawing imo...

...however in the second half i thought we played great, outplayed them, we were having shots, making good breaks, every single player played well apart from one, and that was anichebe, he played terrible tonight.

I hink we deserved to win from our second half performance.

Also our fans were great.

And one more thing, did moyes playing jagielka just off johnson??

Agreed. (y)

very harsh on vic, he was stunning first half, but tired and couldnt keep fighting second half, i thought he was due to be subbed at least 10 minutes earlier - thought moyes wanted to give 'the eleven' the full 90 and herald them as such.

in fact, very very harsh on vic.

Well I think you were very harsh on the rest of the team. I don't think many would say that Anichebe looked a quality player tonight.

absolutely agree with this, he put the shits up their defence on more than one occasion(y) (y) (y)

Anichebe played terrible, he didnt use his height or strength to his advantage at all!!, i only saw him win 2 headers against the defenders...

Just look at osmans goal to see anichebe, he didnt jump at all to get the ball, when imo any other player would have, and would have scored.

Anichebe didn't play well. I do believe in credit where its due, and I thought he lacks the ability to hold the ball up, pass, he isn't aware and he never won any headers and gave away too many free kicks.

Compare that to Vaughan last season against Fulham who was winning everything in the air.

Don't get me wrong, I think he will develop, but at the moment he is weak in areas that we can't afford to be weak in. If everyone was fit he wouldn't be playing.

Thank you. :)
