Everton recorded an impressive 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane to go top of the league -albeit after only two league games.
Goals from Joleon Lescott, Leon Osman and Alan Stubbs seen the Toffees rise to summit of the Premier League in an impressive display against a Tottenham side who have been tipped to fly high this season after several big signings this summer.
The first goal came from a trademark Arteta free-kick from wide on the right, which makeshift left-back Joleon Lescott rose to head home from 6 yards in front of the watching England manager Steve McLaren.
Tottenham threatened more after the initial shock of conceding an early goal, with the equaliser coming from an Anthony Gardner header after the Spurs centre-half found himself free in the six yard box from a in-swinging corner kick.
Everton broke back quickly, capitalising on a restless Spurs crowd as Leon Osman restored Evertons lead on 36 minutes.
After a good build up involving Osman, Anichebe and Arteta, Everton managed to grabbed a second after Anichebe held up the ball, laying off to the right for Arteta, who swung in another cross for Anichebe. The headed clearance was too weak and Osman was on hand to drill the ball home left-footed.
Osman drilled the ball past England keeper Paul Robinson.
Spurs, under pressure after a poor result at Sunderland on the opening weekend, valiantly tried to come back into the game, but Everton managed to knock in a third seconds before half-time with a thundering deflected free-kick from Alan Stubbs - cheekily helped by some handywork in the wall by Lee Carsley.
Spurs went into the tunnel to a chorus of boos, whilst Everton fans were delighted. The second half promised more goals, but a stout defensive performance from the defence, combining with a potent counter-attack, meant that Everton comfortably closed the game out despite scares from Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe.
In truth, Everton looked more likely to add to their tally late on with Andy Johnson having a great chance after excellent work from midfield maestro Mikel Arteta.
