But what do we do about the Ukrainian chap?

Mykolenko is a left back, Patterson is a right back.

Hes not slow in the slightest mate

Doing great mate thanks, kids are running me ragged though :)

I really like the lad, surprised zat saud you where concerned back possibly a lack of pace though, My old rule is, if he beats someone are they able to get back at him, in this lads case they aren't, so for me thst ticks the pace box fine, hes looking quicker this season tbf though also stronger as well - but at 20 maybe to be expected that (see Gordon now he's getting regular time)

There's a huge amount of pressure and expectations heaped on him for Georgia too and he's handling it well, shows maybe a strong character

Saw the Georgia Spain game when it was on telly here mate, the spanish basically tried kicking him out the game then reverted to doubling up on him every time he got the ball -

Thats good to hear ;)

I havent looked since but i seem to remember that he looked a bit like Darren Anderton in the way he moved.

Seemed to glide past opponents more with speed of thought and a trick rather than pure pace of say Gray, for example.

Looked to have huge potential but just lacking in acceleration and pace.

I watched the highlights of the Spain game ages ago, i seem to remember he tormented their right back (?).

I think the manager recently said that he would like to sign a no. 10 because we don't have one in the squad.
I think Onyango will come in as a defensive midfielder but in addition to a left full back and right full back I think we might get another wide player.....funds permitting.

I could see Doucoure starting and Onyango being his backup / rotation option.

My guess is that we bring in a pure defensive midfielder e.g Kamara and also another player to support him if we move Allan on.

As for 10 position, we use that as more of a support striker i suppose with Richarlison and i guess Dobbin or Gordon rotating in for him.

If @Eggs Suspicious nature is proven to be true then Richarlison moves on and perhaps we sign the Georgian boy as 10.

I think there's a lot in this.

I'm sure people will want binary options- Digne V Benitez etc. It's perfectly possible to think Digne has been a good servant for the club but the manager is entitled to make tough calls. At 28, of we can get more than we initially paid for him, having had what, 4 years of good service out of him, that's a big plus for me.

In a broader sense, replacing a 28 year old, while you can still get some money and bringing in a 22 year old who may be able to match, or even improve upon him is the sort of move we have to do more as a club. This is what Ajax, PSV, Leverkusen, Dortmund, Sevilla, Lille, Monaco etc do. It's what most teams, with our turnover and spend do. The specific situation further amplifies this pressure too, given we are at the limits of FFP and we don't want to go way overboard on it.

To put some reasonably crude numbers on it, and they may not be perfect- but I hope people can get the gist. I'm going to estimate Digne's value has decreased to about 8m around 50% of what we paid. If we sell him for 25m thats a 17m profit. If we assume he is on 100k p/w thats another 5 million. It gives us 22m to play with, to account for a transfer and wages, to break even from an FFP point (which I think is the most the club would sanction spending at this point).

For transfers though, I would assume base it on around 1/3 to 1/4 of the total fee, as it will be written off on that basis (particularly to European teams). Lets work to the premise Mykolenko gets 50k per week and we write the say 19.5m fee off at 6.5m a year over 3 years. That's £9m pounds spent. So essentially we can bring in nearly 3 players of that profile from selling Digne.

If Dom and/or Richarlison go this summer, it would likely allow us to resolve any debt issues we have and probably spent 80-100m on fees. I hope we continue to be prudent with the money, and only really sanction big deals for lads under 24.

The numbers for Digne will be easier to calculate once we know his outgoing transfer fee.

I think Digne is about £6-7mil and Mina £10mil on book values. Sell both at e.g £50mil and its £33mil FFP profit banked + circa £200k a week in wages.

Bring in Patterson + Mykolenko for £30mil on 5 year contracts = £6mil a year for FFP so were still up £33mil - £6mil = £27mil for this season. Wages as well we's be more than £100k a week up on the 2 outs / 2 ins.

In fact, with a couple of sensible sales each window and the release of out of contract players I dont think its difficult to build a young u23 squad. The key is how they all fit in together within systems and mould as a group.

To be honest, I think i could probably pick out several u23 players for almost every position on the pitch that we could sign...its not diffcult. The real difficulty is going to be replacing DCL and Richarlison.

Vlahovic
David
Gouiri
Nunez

They seem to be the main names 'on the market' that we could aim to compete for.

Sell anyone in any position and theres players to target but only Atletico managed to replace forwards and progress.

While the jury is out on whether Rafael should be leading our transfer business three positives have emerged straight away:

One - with Brands out of the way, clearly decisions are being made quicker - if we can get the Ukrainian and Patterson in within the first week of January, then that is a huge step and structural change.

Second - skewing young and having resale top of mind. Rafael, for all his faults, has indicated that he is willing to consider the future when conducting transfer business. Carlo (rightly in some respects) wanted to buy experience and challenge for Europe immediately.

Three - similar to the second point, but the first signs of us utilising a more sustainable financial model where you buy young, and sell at 27/28. This model, which replicates quality European clubs like Dortmund etc... should allow us to challenge, while not killing ourselves from an FFP perspective.

You cannot argue that Rafael hasn't put a massive stamp on the club, in less than six months he has cleaned out recruitment and medical, while also starting to embrace the academy. He needs to improve tactically and with results, but at least he isn't content with the status quo of the last ten years.

Cant argue with anything here...

...but lets see if we do indeed bring in Mykolenko, Patterson and another similar age high potential midfielder this window.

Can’t really knock this strategy mate. Like the post.

If we do get Patterson as well as Mykolenko, then it’s at least changing the transfer strategy and identifying that we can’t just keep having players past their highest peak resale.

Reality is whether you love or hate Digne, we need to rebuild this entire team, so why not sell him get some resale and begin just that.

So yeah, completely agree!

Id be very happy with those 2 full backs for £30mil or less.

Brennan Johnson linked in the mail...£20mil.

Plays for Forest across the forward positions...seems to be a candidate for right winger perhaps.

Mykolenko
Patterson
Johnson
Kvaratskhelia

If those 4 came in with Digne, Mina leaving to cover the cost Id be impressed and amazed.

Feeder club is a feeder club
Keep selling better players and hope to win lotto with the cheap ones
Then keep dreaming about the winning team lol

Unfortunately we are a feeder club, we are a mid table team whom is very unlikely to be chasing for honors in the short to medium term

Please have a look at the business model at Dortmund and in some lesser way Leicester and The Arse

Also look over the park, they sold their best player, Coutinho for 140m and re invested, ManUre sold Lukaku, Chelski sold Eden Hazard, they bought in and made money (winning lotto as you put it)

How strong are the links to Kvaratskhelia?

He would be sensational.

Rafael Benitez being the one who gets Everton down the track of buying young with cheaper deals for more experienced players mixed in would really be something. I'm not sure I totally believe it yet.

If Patterson was any good, he'd have gone elsewhere already if he's that cheap.

Especially to a club that can actually pay a transfer fee and not installments like Brighthouse FC here.

He's also play abar 20 times for rangers. Him and the Ukrainian lad aren't ready for 1st team football.

The irony of number 10’s, we had four of them not so long ago ??‍♂️

What do you class cheap for 20 year old who plays in Scotland ? I think we have had both a £5m and £9m bid turned down last year

Relative to how good he is. If he was a talent, any club would throw money at him. Bellingham went for £25mill at 16 for example.

Regardless, we'll be spending north of £10mill on a lad who isn't a first team starter for Rangers (can't play over a 30 year old ex-newcastle journeyman).

So that's £30mill on two problem positions on two kids that will be thrown in the deep end when both should've been squad fillers/potential for the next season or two.

I think Patterson will be eased in as personally I dont think Coleman will be going anywhere just yet .

Mykolenko looks to be the guy who will be thrown in too quick as there's a sense that Digne has played his last game for us. But given Mykolenko's experience in Europe/CL he might bed in a little quicker ... let's hope so anyway
