Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Actually agree with everything you write, but, due to a thin squad, we need players who can contribute immediately. Players from other leagues usually need some time to adjust to the PL. Players who can be expected to do this reasonably quickly usually cost a good deal of money.

I remember Sheffield United bought Sander Berge, who was considered a great talent and played very well for Genk, and he said he was shocked by the pace in the PL, and needed a long time to adapt. I also think that this season we have little room for experimentation, and the little money we can spend must be spent on players we know can perform a function immediately. Benitez knows what he's getting from Longstaff, nothing spectacular, but a player who can do the hard work.
The perception of needing immediate contributions I frankly don't understand. I admit I am an American which might paint in part my perception of down years being acceptable. That said what is the basis of improvement if not European qualifications which isn't going to happen or simply avoiding relegation. For years we have patched holes for a leaking ship, in hopes of a hasty Europe showing however unlikely or to justify our best talent of a project none of which has worked

This squad is basically comparable or below with the likes of Villa, Wolves, Leeds even Brighton. All of those have or just had a few 40/50 million plus assets comparable to Richarlison Lucas Digne and DCL. Our table position regardless of some poor losses reflects that. Some of those teams however accept sell ons as necessary. Have bought with appreciation being the catalyst. Our biggest problem is we haven't.

The club beyond immediate performers in my opinion needs value propositions that extend past another mid table finish be it 14th or 7th. Our signings need to appreciate or be for prices affording risk and performances judged first and foremost on such players improvement.

Decent patter.
These ‘Stone Highland’ are in the sales mate..

If I was a bitter Rangers fan wouldn’t I be saying the opposite of what I’ve said? Shouldn’t I be saying he’s the second coming and too good for us?
I read your posts thinking the polar opposite, you sound like a bitter Celtic fan that cant/wont acknowledge that Rangers might have a decent young prospect on their hands. That said, I don't massively disagree with what's been said.

Patterson looks like he has everything to turn into a good player, but he's far from there yet. Neither was Robertson though when he made the move south, its took him a good 6/7 seasons to get anywhere near the levels of consistency he shows today and was bedded into the league well by Hull. Tierney stayed at Celtic for far longer than he needed to, to build experience/consistency required for EPL. NP will need time to bed into the league, he wont be the answer to our RB problems from the off.

…yep, I do see that situation. The same has been happening with all the managers he’s employed. There’s nothing a manager can do about it except resign & I don’t see Benitez doing that.
There's nothing for Benitez to resign for over a signing he wants and will get.

You've gone up a blind alley with this stuff about the owners buying players.

The confusion at this club over transfers ended when that clueless Dutch tit was pitchforked; we haven't returned to a DoF role, and that era is over at this club.

The buck stops with the manager either way on players now. That's what I've been calling for, and that's what we have.

I’ve already said if we were going for any Rangers youngster it should be Leon King.

He rejected Chelsea and City to sign his first professional deal after Gerrard promised him first team game time but he’s not been getting any game time either and his contract is running out and Chelsea are rumoured to be after him again.

They’ve several young players I think we should be keeping an eye on. As do a few Scottish clubs.

I actually want Patterson to leave Rangers so he can maybe develop into a proper Scotland player (a massive problem we’ve seen with the OF over the years. Players hanging around without playing). This deal feels like Alan Hutton 2.0 when he went to Tottenham (although his move was after 6 months of form in the first team).

I think it’s bad move for Patterson and Everton. That’s all. If the talk was we were signing him for the really long term and going to loan him out and develop I might feel differently…
