couldn't disagree more with the CB should - Branthwaite is at the club and has done nothing to suggest he shouldn't be given more of a go

defensive midfielder maybe, but I think we more need a midfielder with a bit of guile to complement Allan and Doucs

Yes i agree Branthwaite should be getting games.

Based on quality, the 3 centre backs id go with are him, Mina and Godfrey. Id sell Holgate and Keane.

The problem is that Mina has 18months on his contract and is injury prone...so we need to sell him as well.

That leaves us with Godfrey and Branthwaite so I would go and buy the best possible u23 centre back i could afford and go with those 3 rotating.

If we were to sign more of a 'ball player' or someone with "a bit of guile" then where do they play?

If we go with a back 4 we have no defensive midfielder aside from Gbamin (?!) and Delph (out of contract in summer). Allan and Doucoure prefer to press and we need a player to sit in front of the defence.

Ahead of those two we have an attacking midfield/support striker in Richarlison with DCL ahead then Gray/Gordon/Townsend on the wings. Theres no one sitting and protecting the defence.

If we went with 3 at the back then i still think Benitez would prefer to have a sitter in front of defence and allow one/two of the centre backs to bring the ball out.

So we're selling all of our defenders again so that we can build around one that has never played well in the PL aside from at fullback and one that has one actual start in the league.

Happy Monday everyone.

Question 1:
A man has 5 oranges. He sells all of the oranges.

How many oranges does he have remaining?

Question 2:
A man from America claims to watch Everton matches but has not seen a player play well in his position. This is despite said player being praised several times while playing in that position.

Is the man from America:

A: Lying?
B: A nitwit?
C: In a higher state of Iwobi?

Question 3
If Jarrad Branthwaite has made 3 league starts for Everton, 10 league starts for Blackburn and 9 for Carlisle.

Does he have:

A: One league start?
B: More than one league start?

A lot of people thought Godfrey was playing well because they wanted him to be the answer. He's never actually played well at CB. I love the optimism our fan base brings toward new signings but it also brings a bit of a mythical quality at times. We've seen it with other players too. Bernard immediately springs to mind as someone who was never actually good but for a good two seasons was highly rated in Everton circles.

where did godfrey play last season, because i thought he was great last season, this season not so much

So Patterson and Mykolenko come in for right and left back but we still have the issue at centre back.

Has Branthwaite done enough to start?
If so who does he start with?
Godfrey - more experienced but still learning as a central defender so surely we have to play a 5 man defence.
Mina - the best we have but also the least consistent fit.
Keane - very much a limited defender but that will complement his style.
Holgate - hahahaha

Personally I would play Mina with Branthwaite/Godfrey but that is huge pressure on the defence especially as Benitez plays a 2 man midfield without a holding/defensive midfielder but we have to be more proactive offensively.

If we put in a Gbamin or Onyango or new signing next to Allan and Doucoure, that's our back four all day bar Mina's injury situation.

Godfrey was great last season with a decent manager who knew how to organise a defence.
His best performances were probably at LB to be fair, but I’d like to see him alongside a commanding centre half.

That could have been Mina, but as we all know he’s made of straw with a marshmallow heart and is simply playing at being a professional footballer.

I can understand to a point why Godfrey has been getting some stick for some poor performances but i would say that in his defence (ironic no pun intended) that he's been played in every position in the back four and is in fact the first lad to be moved to cover when someone is missing. I'd like to see him get a run in one position with someone other than the balloon head keane next to him and then have a sound judgement made on his abilities.

I wouldn’t say Godfrey was great at all last season. He did a job at left back for a bit. Whenever he played centre back he was all over the place.

Lookman was another one that people including myself wanted to be good and was just a nothing player in the end.
