Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Honestly this place is utterly bipolar.

Everyone moans for years that we never sell a player for profit/ decent money.

That we should follow other clubs ‘success’ of player trading and/ or unearth some gems/ young players with potential

Thst we end up giving away ageing players who we spent decent money on for nothing.

Whether we like it or not (and I’d still prefer to keep our good players) in Digne we have a rare opportunity to do what most moan about on a daily basis.

Sell a player approaching 29 for a profit, and use the money to re invest in young/ hungry potential.

What’s the alternative? Sell for half his current value in a years time, or worst watch him naturally decline then moan about having yet another ageing player on the books on high wages we can’t shift?!

Make up your mind what you want
I think most of us would rather we didn't sell one of our best players in the middle of a relegation battle. That simple enough for you?

Well loads of people told me we weren't in for Longstaff even though we bid for him in the summer and we've now bid for him again.

@ForeverBlue92 sometimes mate, trust that a few journos know their stuff ;)

I've said for a while Longstaff will come in but he'll essentially replace Delph/Davies/Gomes/Gbamin as our go to option from the bench to cover Doucoure/Allan.

I have no problem with that lads better than all 4 of those losers.

I have no idea about Longstaff. I hear a lot of abuse he receives - but I think that comes about by others viewing every signing through the prism of Benitez.

Is he any good? What are his strengths?

Do you really believe what the media said?
Did you see the last match? Coleman played more attacking in the left side compared with Digne. The rumours between Benitez and Digne probably was not true.
Digne was sold because of our financial problem. We cant give extra fund to Benitez to strenghten the squad. And Digne is the most suitable one to be funded.
To be honest, if we can recruit rightly, I dont think the sales of Digne is wrong.

Erm no. And it was a different formation anyway.

Spot on
Regarding this minus -35mil I heard that Everton had said this was rubbish.

Just out of interest and maybe a question for a financial expert lol . I’m sure I read on that list( can’t find it anymore) that Brighton could spend. I can’t work this out, we have a debt on spending since Moshiri come in of 270mi including the 30 we’ve just spent, brightons is 207. I get we have a higher wage bill

But we finished higher every season, will make more money from TV, gates, sponsorship. And there isn’t a massive difference in debt on spending
I've no idea if the -£35m is accurate. It does serve as a useful starting point for the explanation about how accounting treats money spent on an incoming transfer very differently to money received for an outgoing one though.

Re your point about Brighton: I can only presume that the way salaries are treated in the accounts must factor into the FFP / sustainability. We have some players on ridiculous salaries in the region of £120k per week, whereas I can't imagine Brighton has anyone on more than £60k or £70k p/w... I suspect that's why we have been happy to let several players leave each summer at the end of their contracts and not try to replace them (Besic, Bolasie, etc). The wages saved, over time, have maybe started to make the accounts look a bit better and that would in turn give us more room to spend? Only a theory, I'm no accountant!

'A £22.5million offer plus Geordie midfielder Sean Longstaff is believed to have been placed for the ex-Barcelona star.

Although, while Everton’s interest is long-term, we understand that Longstaff has held no talks with the Toffees at this stage or been informed of any fresh approach.

Digne is yet to agree to a move to Tyneside - despite an offer to end his Goodison Park nightmare after falling out with Rafael Benitez.'

Most reliable journo for Newcastle news there. £22.5m plus a player we can sign for free in the summer? Koff with that. Has to be £30m+ if we're selling him to a direct relegation candidate.

He isn't, that's the thing.

He doesn't keep the ball as well as Gomes. He's no better than Davies.

He does have the bonus over Delph that he can actually stay fit. Gbamin has been mightly unlucky but I don't understand why he hasn't been given more of a chance.

A huge part of our issues is Benitez's insistence on playing 2 in midfield. But Longstaff isn't a sitter so wouldn't play that role either.

I don't know much about him mate tbh although he's up there in the stats for pressing and seems the industrial hard worker type Benitez likes which I haven't a problem with as our midfield needs a player like that imo.

Delph and Siggurdsson are out of contract this summer and Gbamin may be off - we need 1-2 cheaper signings to pad that area of the squad out.

One of our best players?! I’m sorry but he’s been average, and been that way even before our latest manager.

And in a relegation battle where arguably we are out of possession and defending more then most, does ‘one of our best’ players who most can agree defending isn’t his strong point, going to really help us?!

If anything it exposes his weakness’ more so

Atsu next probably, Fat man working his way through his extensive network in the game.

Would love to read the dossier that fooled squeaky voice and got him the job

Nah it's already been rubbished that they've not bid. They do have interest though, and Everton have bid for Longstaff.
Digne has, at this stage, no interest in going there. He wants Chelsea.
