Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

I agree. Seen a fan Twitter saying him and Doucoure could be a good partnership. Forget the sky 6 for a minute, just look at the other clubs were trying to compete with. West Ham Rice & Soucek. Leicester Ndidi & Tielemams.

They’re streets ahead of Longstaff & Doucoure

If we stick with 2 centre mids then in terms of 'profile' for that position we would only have Doucoure and Onyango.

I imagine those two competing/rotating while we sign 2 more defensive midfielders to compete for the other position.

If thats Longstaff and someone like Guimaraes (linked yesterday) then it makes sense.

Guimaraes and Doucoure would put us up there with West Ham / Leicester.

We would need to shift out the other midfielders.

From an accounting and FFP point of view, the £30m spent on Mykolenko and Patterson gets spread over the entire lengths of their contracts, believed to be 4.5 years each. Therefore we only "spend" about £6.75m combined on them in this year's accounts.

When a player is sold however, the entire value of the transfer fee gets added to the accounts in the current year. So if/when Digne goes for £25m or whatever, we will easily cover this year's share of the outlay on Mykolenko and Patterson, and we will make the accounts look healthier by wiping out much of the existing deficit.

There were reports that we were at -£35m (for FFP, or whatever the relevant rule is) coming into the January window...

Buying Mykolenko and Patterson will put us at around -£42m (the £6.75m I mentioned above)...

But selling Digne will bring us back to around -£17m (assuming he goes for £25m).

These are the sort of sales we need to make in our current situation. We are not short of cash, but we are right on the edge of the rules relating to accountancy in terms of how much we have spent at certain times. If we can sell Holgate or Mina in this window I suspect we will, and if a decent offer for Gomes, Davies or Gbamin is made then they'll be sold too - these sales will further assist our accounting.

The two I'd dearly LOVE to see leave are Tosun and Delph, but they both have six months left and are not even vaguely in form so no-one will buy them now when they'll be free in the summer.

Patterson is 5.5 years. If you take the £11mil fee (with £5mil in add ons) and guess that Mykolenko is £12mil (with another £5mil in add ons) then the £23mil works out to something around £5mil.

Honestly this place is utterly bipolar.

Everyone moans for years that we never sell a player for profit/ decent money.

That we should follow other clubs ‘success’ of player trading and/ or unearth some gems/ young players with potential

Thst we end up giving away ageing players who we spent decent money on for nothing.

Whether we like it or not (and I’d still prefer to keep our good players) in Digne we have a rare opportunity to do what most moan about on a daily basis.

Sell a player approaching 29 for a profit, and use the money to re invest in young/ hungry potential.

What’s the alternative? Sell for half his current value in a years time, or worst watch him naturally decline then moan about having yet another ageing player on the books on high wages we can’t shift?!

Make up your mind what you want

Spot on. Pity we havent sold Digne for £30mil already though as that would be a good deal.

Under £25mil and its not ideal.

I've said for a while Longstaff will come in but he'll essentially replace Delph/Davies/Gomes/Gbamin as our go to option from the bench to cover Doucoure/Allan.

I have no problem with that lads better than all 4 of those losers.

We would need to sell Allan, Davies, Gomes, Gbamin and see Sigurdsson + Delph leave in the summer for the Longstaff deal to make sense.

If he and Onyango are rotation options for Doucoure and a top class new signing then ok.

Need to start seeing alot of sales now.

'A £22.5million offer plus Geordie midfielder Sean Longstaff is believed to have been placed for the ex-Barcelona star.

Although, while Everton’s interest is long-term, we understand that Longstaff has held no talks with the Toffees at this stage or been informed of any fresh approach.

Digne is yet to agree to a move to Tyneside - despite an offer to end his Goodison Park nightmare after falling out with Rafael Benitez.'

Most reliable journo for Newcastle news there. £22.5m plus a player we can sign for free in the summer? Koff with that. Has to be £30m+ if we're selling him to a direct relegation candidate.

Sky ran the same story last night then quickly back tracked saying no bid has been made.

He isn't, that's the thing.

He doesn't keep the ball as well as Gomes. He's no better than Davies.

He does have the bonus over Delph that he can actually stay fit. Gbamin has been mightly unlucky but I don't understand why he hasn't been given more of a chance.

A huge part of our issues is Benitez's insistence on playing 2 in midfield. But Longstaff isn't a sitter so wouldn't play that role either.
So what are his strengths? Have you seen him play many times?

I don't know much about him mate tbh although he's up there in the stats for pressing and seems the industrial hard worker type Benitez likes which I haven't a problem with as our midfield needs a player like that imo.

Delph and Siggurdsson are out of contract this summer and Gbamin may be off - we need 1-2 cheaper signings to pad that area of the squad out.
He's up there with PPDA (presses per defensive action), but so is Allan.

Basically he chases the ball a lot but doesn't win it back often. And PPDA means nothing unless the whole team presses as a unit.

People were slagging Gray before he kicked a ball for us mate.

For once fans just need to give these lads a chance if they sign. Benitez may want to change formation for all we know but wants certain types of players before he does it.

The problem is people hate the manager so much that every signing, decision and thing he does is met with automatic suspicion.

If Longcock signs lets give him a shot eh?

Basically he'd be a fit option to replace two similar players who cant stay fit?

Seems acceptable if the fee is low enough or we can even recycle the said 2 perennially injured players.

You mean you then.

If the budget is small then can someone please explain the logic of paying money for a player we can sign for free in about 5 months.

I'm no football or financial expert, but this doesn't feel like a difficult decision to me. Either sign him in June on a free or don't sign him at all. And that's even before considering the skill set of a player, it's just basic common sense.

Yes.

He's a pretty big lad, so does cover ground well even if he isn't quick.

A few years ago he played a deeper role and was a bit like Carrick in the sense he liked to move the team up with some decentish passes. However, his form fell off a cliff and defensively he lacked the positional sense to play as a six.

He doesn't really have any creativity to his game, his passes aren't progressive but then under Bruce and Benitez that's hard to tell. He has played recently more under Howe, but more as a hassler in midfield. He's not very disciplined and not very creative. He's basically a slightly bigger Tom Davies but on the footballing side they're very similar quality. If anything, Davies is better at the deeper role but Longstaff a slightly better passer over range.

He did have a very promising start but he's had injuries and lack of form in the last 2 seasons

I think our midfield needs a sitter if we're going to get the best out of Allan and Doucoure or, if Benitez insists on playing 4411/4231, we need a proper attacking player who can transition with the ball in the '10' slot. I don't think Longstaff is either.

Yeah, for example you said he wasn't good enough to start matches

One of our best players?! I’m sorry but he’s been average, and been that way even before our latest manager.

And in a relegation battle where arguably we are out of possession and defending more then most, does ‘one of our best’ players who most can agree defending isn’t his strong point, going to really help us?!

If anything it exposes his weakness’ more so
He's still one of our best players though firstly because half of them aren't even average and secondly because he's got the ability to do a lot more but can't due to the dull negative football we play. I don't want us to play dull negative football so selling the players who are better than that to free up money to sign more Townsends Rondons and Longstaffs who fit into the awful style isn't something I want us to be doing. You haven't made the really clever point you think you have player trading is something I'm happy for us to do and Digne is one I'd happily trade but him being a pawn in a Benitez power move is a very worrying sign for anyone who cares about Everton.

So what are his strengths? Have you seen him play many times?

If you look at his statistics, his off the ball stats are pretty good but his numbers in possession are pretty woeful. He might win you the ball back a few times, but he won't do anything with it. I think the eye test backs that up as well. I've always saw him as someone who can break up play and maybe cover for full backs, but lacks the technical ability to be really effective at this level.
