Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Steve Bruce managed him though. Before Bruce came, he was supposedly good. I’m sure never ever worth anything like £50m.
Thing is he only made a total of 19 PL appearances across two seasons at Newcastle under Benitez.

He spent more time with Bruce than Benitez and IIRC his best spell was the start of 19/20, with United quoted £50m around then.

Re Longstaff:

Kamara and Zakaria are both OOC in the summer... But if they leave on frees, they won't come to us. Bid £10m for either of them now, before even looking at Longstaff. Let's see if either of their clubs wants some return on their investments.

If we were to somehow get one of Kamara or Zakaria stick him on a 4.5 year contract and the transfer fee is only £2.25m per year in accounting terms. The money for that (and his wages) is provided just by Delph and Tosun leaving in the summer and their wages coming off the books.

Longstaff is not of the standard of either Kamara or Zakaria.
Precisely.

It's a long shot on Zakaria I think, he's had a resurgence after his injury. Kamara is more attainable. Both long shots but both worth a go. But Benitez wants, Benitez gets.

Spot on. Exactly.

I think we're already accepting that there's not going to be a smooth transition, aren't we?

It's not even about the talent here mate, it's for me - as @chazzle_dazzle says - that Longstaff doesn't really solve anything in our midfield. It lacks a sitting player for a 3 and it lacks a creator if we play 4231. He's neither. So it seems like a pointless signing.

Whereas with Gray and Townsend (and I wanted Gray btw when we were linked), we had definite needs for both of those players.

100% mate, Gray and Townsend solved a clear problem, 1 pace and 2 delivery. We needed to get players with their profile in.

Longstaff fits nothing we require, unless it is to replace Davies. Also, two very different players.

We need to start defining the midfield more, and get some sort of system in there, we have players who can't play a two - who are playing a two and getting over ran because they don't have the discipline to stay where they are needed. We have players who I genuinely think can't play in a 3 because we have no-one who sits effectively, or ball carries effectively, or creates effectively. Its just a midfield of players who move a lot, and do not an awful lot else.

That's not me saying they are bad players, but effective am not sure they are at all.

I'm not sure that it's going to be up to us whether we sell Richarlison and Calvert Lewin in the summer I'd be absolutely amazed if at least one of them isn't banging the door down saying they want out. That's if (and in my opinion it is a very very big if) we're even still in the league. That's why saying "the only risk" is a bit stupid because it's just about the biggest risk imaginable.
You're right when saying Richi or DCL may want to leave.

You're right that if we get relegated, they are certain to want to leave.

BUT

If/when that conversation arises, the club needs to be in a healthier financial position than it is now, so that:

We don't HAVE to sell in order to stave off financial disaster;

And if we do agree to sell we at least don't have to accept derisory bids way below either player's value.

I'd rather take £5m or £10m less than Digne's true value now than take £20m or £25m less on DCL or Richarlison's true value in the summer. Plus I don't see Digne being the difference between us staying up or being relegated at this point.

Itls not a pointless signing if he's available week in week out and allows others to move into different roles.

You're not seeing the wood for the trees here.

Brilliant way of putting it, spot on.

I'm not arguing with this point though I was arguing with the flippant comments from the other poster saying what are you whining about this is what you wanted you idiots. Whether its a great plan for solving our ffp issues or not isn't what most fans care about we want to see the team start to win games and ideally we also want to be entertained so selling players who many people think could help us to do that won't be received very well.
