Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

I've not seen much of Mykolenko and I'd be surprised if you have. From what i've read he's a left back who would be more likely to move to centre half than left wing and his attacking style i've seen described in more than one place as kick it forward and run after it. If thats true then yes he is another player like that because i'm talking about their style of play not their age.

You’d be correct, I’ve not seen much of him either. I’ve certainly not read or seen anything about ‘kick & run after it’.

Either way, I prefer to judge players with my own eyes, so I’ll not pass judgment on the type of player he is until I’m in my seat and watch him live.

But my original point still stands. We have by the looks of it used the Digne sale money to invest in two young hungry players who both should improve, and have loads of potential.

That’s what nearly every fan I see on here moans we never do! We haven’t sold Digne to bring in ageing money grabbers.

I actually think Longstaff wouldn’t be too bad a signing…his pressing stats are really impressive and think he has a decent ceiling to progress. I’d rather him than Delph or gbamin…but do think we should be looking at someone a bit more creative/attacking in midfield to make us a bit more of a threat.
Hopefully Longstaff would play alongside Allan and free up Doucoure to play that role.

Just saying mate, Longstaff's pressing stats are impressive but that has no impact in a team that doesn't press well.

Allan has been up there in PPDA this season, and Doucoure not far behind. But the team doesn't press as a unit and doesn't appear to have been given any instructions to do so. So it doesn't really make a massive impact unless others are also joining in in a cohesive manner. And 4411 is not a good system to press in as it leaves too many gaps, while 541, which we've played in the last two games, has the same issue unless the team is coached to perfection.

Thing is he only made a total of 19 PL appearances across two seasons at Newcastle under Benitez.

He spent more time with Bruce than Benitez and IIRC his best spell was the start of 19/20, with United quoted £50m around then.
Hmmm…

I guess I am trying to get used to the idea of him coming.

Yeah you do have a point tbf - I think a system change and new full backs would make a difference. But also worried about how our centre backs are equipped to deal with any other style that isn’t just sitting deep.

I am seeing the wood for the trees. He's actually had a pretty patch injury record so the availability may not be as good as you think (though certainly better than Delph, Gbamin!)

I just don't see where he fits into the midfield atm that allows him to be good at his role and allows others to play another role, that's what I mean.

It could maybe work if Benitez played a 4231 with Doucoure as the 10. But it has to be a proper 4231, which Benitez hasn't played and doesn't look like playing, because even at Palace when he switched to that shape midway through the game he pushed Gomes right up to the second striker position, and that isn't a 4231.

Formations only matter so much, obviously, but if you're pushing the 1 behind the striker right up then it leaves a huge gap in midfield.

If the plan was Allan-Doucoure-Longstaff, with Doucoure slightly ahead of the others then in theory I think that could just about muddle through, but we'd need positional discipline from Longstaff and Allan that neither of them have shown so far in their careers.

I'd love to be wrong if he comes and for Longstaff to turn into a Carrick-type as initially suggested, orchestrating from deep. I just don't think he knows how to play that role though. That isn't a criticism as like I say he's good at other things, but those things aren't useful for a sitting player in a 433 shape.

He's looking for a midfield lap dog for the squad.

Like you say...hasn't played a midfield 3 all season. Always a 2. So it's pure backup for Allan/Doucoure.

He offers nothing though. It's Tom Cleverly mark 2. No doubt we'll give him a 5 year deal, won't leave until that's up. Will get booed loads.

There's better players out there. Like loads.

My main issue with 4231 is like you say, the players fitting it but also that Benitez simply doesn't play it. He may think he is, but he doesn't. He plays 4411 which is a very different system and one that is not used anywhere anymore really. Burnley played it at Old Trafford last week but they normally go 442.

It pushes the 1 behind the striker right up and the wingers are in their bank of 4. A 4231 is played with a proper midfield five that is compact in defence but then springs forward in attack. West Ham did it brilliantly last year when Lingard came in.

Think it's been different wherever he's been - At Valencia he had Aimar as his number 10. Gifted player, but he really did graft which was sort of unnoticed, so he helped out Baraja and Albelda behind him

At Liverpool it varied, but by the end he seemed to have settled on Gerrard as the number 10 and he also helped out Alonso and co behind him.

Can't remember how he set up at Napoli tbh

Here it's been Richarlison, when we've had players fit enough to choose from, and that really has been more of a 4411

Tend to think your distinction of 4231/4411 depends mostly on who the number 10 is tbh

Doucoure can’t play that role, he gives the ball to the opposition as much as his own teammates. That’s a poor midfield 3 and won’t get us anywhere.

The midfield needs a complete overhaul, obviously it’s going to take a couple of years. But we’re miles off in the midfield area.

Imo to challenge the top 6 abs European places, Doucoure isn’t good enough

Well he's not going anywhere so I would get used to seeing him in the first team for the next few years. Personally I think he's decent, and given more freedom could get us 10 goals a season from midfield, which is an area we lack goals from.

Weird coincidence that he was only really successful when he had top class players in the middle of the pitch.

Tactical genius and all....facht

And the only point i'm making in return to you is that you can believe thats the best model to follow overall AND that an individual example of it isn't the best idea at that moment in time. I want us to play open attacking exciting football but I don't want to see us go to the Etihad playing Kamikaze football and losing 8-0 and this is exactly the same thing. You're allowed to think it's good and i'm allowed to think it's bad but saying people are stupid because this is what they asked for is wrong it's not that black and white.

Re Longstaff:

Kamara and Zakaria are both OOC in the summer... But if they leave on frees, they won't come to us. Bid £10m for either of them now, before even looking at Longstaff. Let's see if either of their clubs wants some return on their investments.

If we were to somehow get one of Kamara or Zakaria stick him on a 4.5 year contract and the transfer fee is only £2.25m per year in accounting terms. The money for that (and his wages) is provided just by Delph and Tosun leaving in the summer and their wages coming off the books.

Longstaff is not of the standard of either Kamara or Zakaria.

Precisely.

It's a long shot on Zakaria I think, he's had a resurgence after his injury. Kamara is more attainable. Both long shots but both worth a go. But Benitez wants, Benitez gets.

Id take Kamara over Zakaria every day of the week.

But id also take Guimaraes over Kamara.

Funnily enough, if we moved on Allan, Davies, Gbamin,Gomes + Delph/Sigurdsson out of contract in summer...

...we could afford both.

Now, those two with Doucoure either in a 2 or a 3 would be very good.

Available this month for sale or loan

Should be imperative that we move on 5 or 6 this window.
