Good post this. While i disliked the way it was handled, i think it was a good move. It's allowed us to move on a high earner and bring in 2 replacements for largely an equivalent fee and likely reduction in wages.I am not sure of many 28 year old full backs that have gone for more than £25m. I'm happy to be proven wrong on that, but I'm not aware of any.
The club has been criticised a fair bit for transfer dealings, but I think we did well with that. No not optimally but we did well.
We seem to have a big thing about selling players, but honestly loads of club in our boat do it all the time. Leverkusen will sell a left back to Frankfurt or whatever and move forward.
My worry is we've not strengthened at LB but replaced an established player (with usually high output) with a player unused to the PL and who will take time to adjust. I think we might see Godfrey start there for a while yet.
With El Ghazi I see no risk involved with it.
We've done good business so far, whoever is currently managing it - if it's Benitez then he deserves some credit.
The key will be the remaining time - can we move in 1 or 2 more and bring in a CB and DM of good calibre, then it will look like a very good January.
