Ultimately this is what defending is all about; you don't need individual excellence (though that helps), you need the right scheme, and the players capable of following the instructions to play it.

It's why I can't get my head around the castigation of the likes of Keane, Holgate and most prevalently John Stones when he was here. The recent systems were off and the players became exposed as a result.

Cast your mind back a whole year and recall how well Michael Keane was playing in a functioning and solid defence under Ancelotti. Now he's become the worst player we've ever signed and consigned to the scrap heap by all and sundry. Defenders need an air of confidence in their play, and certainly need confidence in the shape and defensive tactics. All confidence has long since sailed at Goodison. Hopefully Lampard has learned the art of defensive shape in the past 18 months, or at least has faith in Clement or Edwards to instil this.

Holgate will be good for Brighton as a right centre back in their three, or as an improvement on Veltman as a right back/right wing back when they choose not to unleash Lamptey. That said, it's probably time for him to move from Goodison.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Keane’s form reverted to type as soon as fans were introduced back into stadiums. The man is an absolute yogurt.
