Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

He has been worth every penny and more

I was saying for years when we were penny pinching on a keeper that there are certain positions you have to invest big in. Keeper is one - spend 30 million and walk away for 10 years, it will ultimately be value and so it’s proved.

Pickfords probably made this club 100s of millions in keeping us up the last three seasons.

We are badly thin with the squad we have especially on the wings. I get not wasting money but the idea we couldn't have scouted one winger with pace who was attainable in January. Anyway is what it is we won"t go down but this squad is crying out for additions.

Why has nobody ever mentioned this before...
Does not make it any less true also it wasn't just about yesterday but what we need to progress, window after window we have failed to strengthen in these areas. I get lack of finances and PSR but there is a point where these are just excuses for not recruiting well.

War chest this summer you say?

I dont know if buying a player or 2 would have changed the outcome, personally.

I mean today we had 8 or 9 players off it, so a signing or 2 wouldnt have helped and I really dont see the point in fuming about a game not even played against a team which we have a horrific record against.

Our goal this season was to stay up, we have the players to do that, IMO.
I am not fuming and it isn't just about one game. Its about failure to address clear issues in the squad for years at this point. Issues that stop us progressing I get the financial constraints but I am dubious about some of our recruitment and the failure window after window to address pace and the left back position, hopefully it improves under Moyes.

We have one left back and we only have one genuine winger. Ndiaye prefers ten but can do well on the left, Mcneil and Lindstrom prefer central. So that leaves Harrison who is better on the left but never plays there. Poor squad building and recruitment

The only question I have is does it take us selling Branthwaite in the summer to get the transfer budget we need to completely rebuild our squad? We need about £150-200m spent, and I can't see that having us abide by the PSR rules without a massive departure which is basically either him or Pickford as they're our only sellable assets for big money.

Selling Branthwaite may make sense, but it’s a choice and not a requirement. I’d prefer to keep him.

People are saying we need 150 - 200 million pounds worth of investment, and I don’t disagree. But there will be free transfers that we could benefit from, and we will make use of the loan market as we always do. So I don’t think we will need to invest quite as much as that.

If the PSR rules change as expected we should be able to spend 150-200m this summer without a Branthwaite sale and still be well within the limits.
