Problem is, Liverpool get absolutely top dollar for even average players, and any potential deal would ultimately work out far better for them than us. Would probably be something like Doak plus £20m, with Doak being valued at about £40m.

I agree about this part. Unlike say Palmer from City or Salah from Chelsea you very rarely say “I can’t believe the RS sold x for only £y”. They get top dollar and very few bite them later on. If they are willing to part with Doak I’d be reluctant to pay what they’re asking because they rarely get a bad deal.
