Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

The bottom line is Beto still needs to be paid for.
Irelevant of wether we delayed a payment or not, we also bout Chermiti in the same window, did we need 2?
Could whatever down payment on the 2 be clubbed together to get a better player?

Could the loan money we used on Danjuma been used?

I dont believe how many people fall for the 'beto was all we could afford at the time' drivel.

We probably have to pay more than market value for him due too getting him on Klarma.

Nice one Kev
Lot of bad calls have been made mate because we we were skint and players didnt want to sign for us because of the the public issues at the club .. We need to start looking forward and pray lessons have been learnt and TFG will bring some stability to the club . The Moshiri era is over thankfully !

By the way whatever mitigation I afforded Thelwell I did same for Dyche because they’ve both had to operate within restrictive financial conditions, the difference with Dyche was that it was obvious he had come to the end of his time because of what you could see in terms of team selections, style of play, chance creation, in game management and results.

It’s not so visible with Thelwell as up until recently there have been rumours of interference e.g. the Maupay signing. There have also been reports that he wanted players like Kudus and Minteh etc, so I was encouraged by them. I think this is the window (as tough as it is) where he needs to be brining in some quality additions which improve the 1st team as he no longer has those excuses above.

Gylfi Sigurdsson signed for us in 2017.
Wont even look at how many players we have signed since then.

Thats like saying buying Daniel Amokachi in 94 led to us having to sell Rooney
The other thing with this is even if he signed eight years ago, his contract only finished three years ago, so at that point we will have spent £46m in transfer fees (exc agent fees) plus say £100k a week for five years making total expenditure of around £72m with absolutely nothing back

No it’s not. It’s saying that Thelwell came in where we are absolutely hamstrung financially because of the previous poor transfer activity under Walsh, Brands, Kenwright, Moshiri. Everyone here accepts that the club has been ran like a circus. He has therefore had to operate with a financial hangover. Whether he’s done that to an acceptable level is down to opinion, but I can see why quite a few would criticise him.
So if he is hamstrung financially.
Why is he wasting loan fees on danjuma & Lindstrom?
Wasteing a loan every year on Jack Harrison, loaning a player who Ipswich laughed home because of his spagetti legs in Broja?
Spending a hefty sum of what little money he has to spend (so everyone tells me) on a 4th choice centre half?
Getting tied in to pay £25m for Beto and also buying Chermiti in the same window, blocking the younger players potential of game time?

£15m on Maupay
Conor Coady on loan?
Vinagre?

The players i havent mentioned on that list for fair trial

Onana- Bought for big fee (could it on been spread out better?) But we recouped a really good fee back, so that gets a pass.

N'Diaye, such a shame we only have one player who can run with a football, well done on this one Kev, shows how bad you other signings have been.

McNeil & Garner - been good at times and poor at times. Good squad players, if our other players were better

Mangala & Iroebugnham- Both looked alright, not sure how much he had to do with either because of a)Our relationship with Texor & b) PSR

You cant see that list and claim he's done a good job

Hudson Odoi & Engala both signed for Forest despite 'public issues at the club'

You really do underestimate the pull of being a PL player

Sorry to say this post and the one a page or two ago are bizarre.

You wonder what other player could have been brought in at the time if instead of Beto & Chermiti signing we'd have combined the downpayments.

Well Beto was ZERO so ? What use is combining a downpayment when one is ZERO.

Secondly, DCL was unable to play the previous season and seemed physically finished. If 2 players werent signed then im certain you would be whinging about that as well.

Take a step back and think things through.

You can’t see that list and claim he’s done a good job
erm, where have I done that? I have actually said in the post I can see why people are criticising him. All I am adding to the thread is that you can’t ignore the context which makes his job harder because he has less budget to work with and not the same budgets that his predecessors had. I personally have always tried to reserve judgment on him because of the unseen aspects of his role. Some of the signings have been poor but how much of that is down to judgment as opposed to his footballing philosophy differing from Dyche and pure desparation in taking a punt e.g. Broja. He definitely seems to have a penchant for continually pursuing the same targets which is a concern.

I didn’t fully turn on Dyche until around November time because I appreciated the job he did for the first year and a half (was a little on the fence with him) so with Thelwell, with no excuses we get to see what he can do this transfer window with less PSR restriction, better cash flow and for a team in dire need of reinforcement. Then I will make judgment once I have seen how any new signings fit into the team as he should now be operating in a different financial landscape.

Kinell youre even posting Thelwell bought Maupay....and for £15mil.

Complaining about players signed for low fees who are definitely worth more e.g Garner and Iroegbunam.

Crying about Lyon in one post then complaining about him signing OBrien in another.

Honestly what a bewildering and terrible post and point of view.

Fair summary 👍

I think that list might need the once-over from a human being.

Mason Holgate, Arnaut Danjuma, Neal Maupay 24/25 signings?

AI really is tripe.

In my head Moyes walked into his office with Thelwell on Day 1. There was a big whiteboard on the wall with the squad shown in their positions on a pitch. They got a red pen and went “this area is weak, this is weak, and this is weak”. Moyes would ask, “okay so what’s the budget for each position?”. They then said okay let’s got 20 names for each position then evaluated them all.

That’s what I’d do if I was a manager anyway.
