Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

….i’m old enough to remember RS buying Ian St John from Motherwell and he didn’t do too bad.
My Dad is a Well foundation member, they sold St John and another player and bought 2 whole stands (that gives you an idea of his level/worth back then)

I've been to a few games - notably the 4-3 win over Dundee Utd in the 92 (IIRC - I was young) Scottish Cup final & The Borussia Dortmund UEFA Cup game (Moller, Sammer, Reidle, Chapuisat all in attendance ... that was the game that peaked B.Ds interest in Paul Lambert, who left out of contract at the end of the season - they got to the UEFA final and lost to Juventus, won the CL the following season (or the one after)).

This Miller is meant to be the real deal, already captained the team at 18. They also have a 19 year old Defender who is meant to be half decent - Evan something or other I think. They've had some good players over the years... our own Frannie Jeffers ended up there for a while, as did bobby brown shoes (as a player - three Spanish/Hispanic lads went, dubbed 'the three amigos' lol).

still loves Everton, yet another player who should have been playing in the 10 (we have a habit of this over the last 20 or 30 years) rather than stuck out left - didn't have the pace.
He was awful. He was a striker who couldn’t run. He reminds me of Beto in that sense. McFadden could score a good goal every now and again, same as Beto can score a header every now and again. But both completely lack the pace to of been a true striker.

….great post, thanks. Not an area I know very well but I went to an Old Firm at Ibrox a few years ago (we know somebody strongly connected to the Rangers first team) and the train from Manchester went through Motherwell.

McFadden was never a striker though. He was a player who played in behind but not really a no10, sort of a support role to someone else. It was the tactically clueless Moyes who threw away everything decent that Faddy had and tried to play him where he clearly didn't want too play. For me he was one of the first players who started to show up Moyes limitations as a manger.

Alan Shearer, Olivier Giroud & Harry Kane - pacy?

TMs data on McFadden career position stats below (doesn't seem correct numbers wise to me, but as a taste of where he played throughout his career), more skewed to the wings if you filter for just Everton (DYOR on that though).

Interesting too see what happens in the winter window given there appears to be large question marks over most of the recruitment team. TFG are surely not going to want to let Thelwell and co spend very much if that's the case, they will leave if for the new people but we will need some players.

He just wasn't really an anything at this level to be honest. He was bought because he had a bit of ability and was cheap and they hoped they could mould it into something more but the reality is he was lucky to have played as many games at PL level as he did, it didn't matter where you put him, he just wasn't that good.

I imagine there will be some continuity be a very scorched earth approach to replace the manager and DOF etc

It seems like they might want a clean sweep though, there are rumours circulating in regards to both Thelwell and Dan Purdy (Head of Recruitment) and obviously Dyche. Maybe they just want their people in which is fine but Id prefer they did that sort of thing in the summer not mid season.

Why not mid season?

A DOF & Head of Recruitment could benefit from 6 months at a club before the summer window.

Managers of course prefer summer but i wonder if they may gain from joining mid season when they can also get experience before the window and preseason

I think in general people are more open to moving and clubs are more receptive to approaches in the summer, so that's a pretty big reason. Personally (and I appreciate this is purely 'vibes' based on my part) I'd quite like the summer to seem like a proper fresh start, with new owners, manager, staff, stadium etc feeling like an opportunity to just start an entirely new chapter. I can't help having the nagging doubt that we'd appoint someone now who isn't really the answer and in the summer there will already be grumblings that they're on borrowed time and need to prove themselves after a poor January window/poor form in the run in etc, and ruin the whole feeling of a new era starting.
