Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

My issue with thelwell is that he seems to get hyper fixated on targets over a lengthy period of time that he's always been partial to , which can create tunnel vision which can be an impediment when you have limited resources
That is a very valid criticism. However, I think there's definitely some media regurgitation of stories and agents agitating for moves throwing us in the mix.

Broja has barely played, but the deal was reported that we weren't paying his wages until fit - we may also be able to send him back to Chelsea in exchange for another player.

Danjuma we paid 3m on loan for a proven PL player who could play anywhere across the front 3. Dyche clearly didn't fancy him.

Harrison - Dyche clearly liked him. Can also play multiple positions. No loan fee, just wages..

Maupay - we have got a fee from Brentford for and Marseille. It's a minor hit in terms of value.

Young has played LB, RB, LW, RW for us. He is available every game.

Beto - there seems to be interest in him, I suspect we'll take a small loss on him.

He's also brought in around £100m profit on players while shedding the club of some very high earners (Gomes, Mina etc). During a time when we've been teetering on relegation and dealing with PSR compliance. If he leaves in the summer he can hold his head high.

Sorry but shedding some of the high earners? Mina and Gomes simply had their contracts run out. And a huge part of the ‘£100 million profit’ was simply accepting a bid for Gordon. (Now worth twice as much).

This isn’t some accounting genuis.

Fully agree.

He has done an excellent job in my view given the circumstances.

Decent profit on Onana and Richarlison.
Gordon has gone on and improved but £45-£50 million was good money for him at the time for a hard working young footballer who isn't very good at finishing with significantly less talent than say a Ross Barkley. Not a knock on Gordon as he's a worker and he can deliver a good ball whilst chipping in with a few goals and he subsequently forced his way into the England Squad.

Given the financial constraints he has worked under I don't really know what else could have been expected from him. There will have been many good players he recommended who could not be pursued due to a lack of funding or the way those deals had to be financed/paid.

Ndaiye for circa £18 million was a snip. He has already more than doubled in value.

O'Brien is starting to look like shrewd business for circa £16 million. Surely he was signed with the thinking that Branthwaite would be sold to United for circa £70-80 million but then they only offered £35 million! He looks a fine long term prospect.

Lindstrum looks a good squad player under a manager who lets him cross the half way line.

Garner was good business for circa £10 million. Tim Iroegbunam has much potential for a similar fee. Gueye was a fantastic signing for £4 million. Mangala was a very good loan just unlucky how it turned out. McNeil was a good signing again with a seemingly favourable payment plan.

Maupay is awful but the indication was that he was effectively plan Z. Lampard sounded disappointed when talking about him upon his arrival! He was brought in on very favourable payment plans according to reports as was Beto.

I would like to see how well he would do with far less financial restrictions imposed upon him but if he does leave in the summer then I wish him well and thank him for the work to date.

Who was going to buy Mina and Gomes? Do you think teams were queuing up to take them off our hands?

The point, which you've missed, is that we don't have sellable assets other than those we've sold and we have for some years now looked like a basket case club, who change managers in the middle of transfer windows who are bordering on relegation every year.

We've had to sell Onana, Richarlison, Gordon + Simms, Cannon, Dobbin.

On Gordon specifically, he may be worth twice as much now, but the value is based on him playing for a much better team, who don't need to sell, who can showcase him across European competition (we couldn't do that).

No but it’s a stretch to give Thelwell credit simply because a players contract runs out.

It’s been a basket case club, no question about that, but he’s still made some awful decisions. You have to sign players that the manager will play.

I think this is a fair assessment. Also underrated that he guided us through last summer without losing Branthwaite, which is bigger than any signing we could’ve made. The fact that he solved last season’s PSR by selling two crap players and bringing in one decent looking one was a very decent bit of trading.
