In summers 2021 and 2022 we will have 16 players out of contract. Of those, James we may extend to 2023 with the years option.

The names/discussion all in the contract expiry thread...

Olsen

10 Expiring 2022
James
Sigurdsson
Bernard

As things stand, summer 2022 we would look like having these 20 players;

7 Expiring 2024
Virginia
Richarlison

Gbamin
Gomes

5 Expiring 2025
Calvert-Lewin
Holgate
Gordon
Keane
Godfrey

GK: Pickford/ Virginia
RB:
CB: Holgate / Godfrey / Mina / Keane / Branthwaite
LB: Digne / Nkounkou
DM: Gbamin
CM: Davies / Allan / Doucoure / Gomes
RF: James / Iwobi
CF: DCL / Kean
LF: Richarlison / Gordon

Its clear that we need to strengthen RB + DM + CM above anywhere else.

As @Saint Domingo wrote, the midfield (bar Gbamin) only has 2 good players for 3 positions...zero depth beyond that.

2 midfielders and a top right back needed.
So we are stuck with Gomes until 2024 .......bloody hell!

With regard to your analysis ......Kean won't be returning to play for us.
We need a minimum of RB ,DM , CM and striker ( and almost certainly one if not two keepers ).

Not always true. City have regressed from a few seasons ago, Arsenal are far worse, United aren’t as good as they were under Ferguson, Chelsea have regressed from where Conte had them. Liverpool will regress at some point. Sure they will all try and improve but they don’t always have top managers.

We have a top manager, we need to improve year on year so that in a season or twos time we are in a position of strength just as they are starting to maybe struggle.

The problem is some on here want us to go to the moon immediately with a midfield of Sigurdsson and Davies. It won’t happen. It took Ferguson time to sort out United, Kendall needed time, even Guardiola needed a season and 100s of millions, Klopp needed time.

Carlo doesn’t seem to be getting much slack whatsoever. He wins three in a row, has us in fourth, but because we narrowly lost a cup tie to a very good United team when we had lots of injuries some people are straight back to knocking him.

The collective patience of some Evertonians seems to have completely gone. In Martinez’s first season he started of with three draws to poor opposition and everyone stayed so positive. He went out of the league cup to Swansea and still everyone was supportive. He got smashed in the derby, we threw away the home derby, and we bottled the palace game for fourth. Yet still, Everton fans were right behind the team.

Ancelotti has picked up a far worse hand than Martinez had, one that wasn’t gifted with Barkley and Stones in it on top of a top 7 squad. He’s doing his best to turn it round yet some of the fan base on here seems to have lost patience completely. Pages on pages dissecting a draw to Burnely like it’s the worst thing in the world, how dare he lose away to a mid table Newcastle team with 5 of his best players missing, how dare we let Fulham have any moments in their game against us on their own patch. It’s honestly getting a bit embarrassing, it’s very entitled, win every game Carlo or we kick off is essentially the remit now. Btw it better be through absolutely dominating the opponent home and away orher wise we’ll moan as well. No excuses, we don’t care if your players are injured or tired, or if you get any bad luck, just win every game otherwise you’re getting tactical lessons from some posters on here.
Football fans want success. We haven’t won a trophy for 25 years, people had started to believe we could win one and now we’re out, people are bound to be annoyed. People seem to bristle at any criticism of Ancelotti, it’s a bit weird. He’s great, he’s doing a good job in the main, but he’s not infallible. Nobody really wants him sacked or thinks we should win the league or whatever but when you come away from a home game against a supposed rival thinking you were lucky not to lose 5-0 you’re going to fire a bit of flak the managers way. It’s really not the big deal some people would like it to be.

Amazed how many people are counting Gbamin as an option going forward.
I'm struggling to think of any examples of players that have come back successfully after being out as long as he has.

He is still a player on the books with a contract till 2024 (same as Gomes)...

Hopefully he comes back but, as you say its very unlikely.

We dont know about Kean yet...

Pocchetino is taking over PSG...he may love him or hate him. Never know and its a long time in football till the end of the season.

At the moment we need a RB + DM + CM...

If Kean does go then we'll also (as you say) need a CF...

For now, id be thrilled with just one of those 3 positions being filled with a top class player...the others can wait till summer.

I don’t think that will cone
Into it. He cost about 22mil, so on the old book value he’s worth about 13mil

Gomes will be out the door as soon as we find a buyer i think.

Hard to argue with that

I think your first point about people starting to believe is in my opinion because hes getting blood out of a stone in the league. The vast majority of the squad that have stunk the place out are now sitting in the top 4. The reality is they havent suddenly discovered they are very good players. We(ancelotti) just found a system to reel off 3 straight victories. Coupled with that very different team at the start of the season who were more attack minded and put 12 points on the board straight away.
I find myself defending ancelloti on here more than i prob would because quite frankly there are some shocking posters on here who are the definition of knee jerk.
The lack of quality in the squad shone through last night. Which is exactly what drum has been being banged for i dont know how long. We all know it. We've all watched them for the past few years. So we shouldnt really lose sight that that feeling of starting to believe is still based around those who have been very disapointing for Everton. As long as thats taken into account when results dont go to plan then maybe a more balanced view will be taken by a lot more.

I think Carlo has worked wonders. To have this rabble sit fourth is quite an achievement, but as I have said before, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we lost to Sheffield United at the weekend and get thumped by City. We'll be on a rollercoaster for as long as Carlo has to rely on the unreliables that compose our squad. Win three on the bounce, lose four, win two, lose one - that'll be us this season.

Thinking about it, how many of the current squad do you actually enjoy watching? I'd cross the road to watch James. I think the new signings, Allan and Doucore, could be good team players. Digne is a good attacking player but a poor defender. Richarlison has a lot to learn - if he improves his attitude and learns from Carlo he may eventually play for a CL regular. DCL has been a model pro over the last 18 months. The rest? Young Godfrey has potential. Holgate is facing a critical 2021 - now or never time for him or he'll soon be 25 and still not fully established. Keane's improved, but he's no world-beater. The rest are a combination of has-beens or never-will-bes.

So, any idea that we can sort of sit out the January window just doesn't stack up. Not if we are serious about playing in Europe. Ancelotti is a great manager, and you can see what he might be able to bring with the proper support, but if we sit out this window we can forget about a top 6 finish come the summer. We just do not have the requisite quality.

You'd be mad not to take £12mil for Davies.

However, we would have to get at minimum two other CMs in to cover him, as we are already short.

Khedria on loan makes a lot of sense as a short-term option if Brands doesn't like getting his main targets in during the winter.

Would really like to get in Ali as well - anyone that watched both games last night must be crazy if they think he wouldn't be an upgrade on what we have.

We can compete if we came out of the Jan window with:

Doucoure, Allan, Gomes, Siggurdsson, Ali, Khedira, Delph and Gbamin
Alli isn't really a central midfielder. I mean if he isn't playing as a #10 I'm not really sure he has any value. Even when he plays that role most of his effectiveness is around the box. He isn't really a player who get the ball up the field or relieves pressure I don't think. His best seasons he was basically a second striker making runs off Kane to score. I think people might be making him into something he isn't in their heads.

Our first XI is competitive with anyone. I really believe that. Now we've got no depth at all so him keeping it on course the last few weeks is genuinely impressive but he needs to try and progress it a bit or we aren't going to keep it up. James being back should help.

Absolutely correct. Dele Alli is NOT the answer to our needs in midfield.

If he were to join us in January, I would expect to either see him splitting time with DCL as the CF in our 4-3-3 or see Ancelotti start using a 4-4-2 with Alli, DCL and Richarlison sharing the load in manning the front pair. I don't see the player being happy in the first scenario, and I don't think we have the wide players for the second scenario.
