Everton January transfer window 2021

From what ive seen English coaches focus too much on technical ability which for me takes away players natural flair.

Yes maybe. I think there's a couple of things here;

1) Of late we have produced winning teams/players
2) We do have players with flair, Sancho-Foden etc
3) Players don't get exposure, and in truth should move abroad more (as is starting to happen)
4) And perhaps most critically- England is a small country in a global game. Given our size, we produce decent enough talent, but there is a whole world out there.

If we sign this lad we might see an influx of Ecuadorians on the forum. @Sassy Colombian might have competition for Carlos's affection!
Still waiting for Kevin Kilbane to invite his mate onto here

Given the money in our game and the facilities and coaching, even at youth level, perhaps we should produce more?!

I think the injury he had has really ruined him. He was by no means a great player before his injury like but he doesn't even look like he can play football any more. I think at the start of the season the club probably thought he'd match Kean's contribution from last season which was their justification for loaning him without replacing him and first season Tosun probably would have done so without any issue but we can see now he's clearly not up to it.

He just looks lost whenever he comes onto the pitch.
It's having a dead cat on his head that causes him to appear confused.

Tosun isn't a patch on Jelavic, not even close. Not even with the Jelavic drop off hindsight.

Jelavic had real quality, and that 1st 6 months he was brilliant. I don't think there are many players I have loved as much, as quickly. But Moyes changed the system to have him run the channels, like he did with Bent, Beattie, Johnson, and tried to do with Yak, etc. Totally killed his impact and his confidence.

The most baffling thing was he then went and signed his strike partner from Rangers, and proceeded to play him on the wing and kill his impact and confidence as well. I'm sure it made some sort of sense to him at the time.

Back to Tosun. He did score a few important goals at the back end of that season, and as painful to watch as we often were under Allardyce, his 2 signings did have a relative impact at the time. But it was clear early on that he (Tosun) didn't have much to his game.

Earlier this season, I foolishly thought a reinvigorated Tosun, under the tutelage of Ancelotti, and with a new found confidence, could perhaps come in and put himself about, and with the added creative flair of James, maybe even be something of late in the game super sub, taking advantage of tiring defenders who had been put through their paces from 85 mins of DCL's running and battling. But alas, no. He has barely broken a sweat and couldn't look less interested.

In the end, the most impressive thing Tosun has managed is to make Oumar Niasse look good, both in terms of quality, desire and most importantly, value.
Jelavic just had an unbelievable run when he first came in to the side. He looked like he was going to be class, but he just reverted to type. It wasn't Moyes killing his career, he just went back to being the type of player he'd been for his entire career outside of those 15 or so games. He's by no means the first or last player to have a fantastic run of form that they never repeat, it's not all that weird. Devastating like, because I'm with you that I thought our prayers had been answered, but not hugely uncommon.

Yeah I agree Jelavic was a better player, just meant more in how his style compared to Tosun. Both pretty much useless anywhere except the 18-yard box.

We made an absolutely ludicrous call in October to have Tosun (who wasn't even fit at that stage) be our back up forward heading into the winter. A winter we knew at that stage would be busy (we'd already got into the EFL Cup quarters) and had the added risk of COVID.

It was stupid, and it resulted in us flogging DCL and to a lesser extent Rich, who has his own issues.

Somehow, we've scraped through, but as we saw v Utd and then the other day, we just have very little to change games.

Yeah, at the time, I myself tried to justify it, thinking maybe Carlo knows something we don't. I thought there must be an incentive there to try and show something, to try and grasp the opportunity with both hands. For many, there won't be many chances to work with a manager like Ancelotti at a club like ours, and with players like James. It shows a real character flaw if you have that chance and don't fight for every opportunity. I think/hope that Carlo will have duly noted this and will remember when the time comes.

I just think he's crap mate.

I mean, he's fine in the box - if a chance came to him I'd back him - but we haven't created many chances lately (that's not on Tosun), so he's just next to useless.

He tries when he does come on, just not good enough though.

It was a poor decision from all involved.

I keep reading this, but I swear I’ve seen him miss more good chances than he’s scored. I don’t think he’s actually that good a finisher myself.

He's definitely not a crack marksman like some people make out. I get what @BlueToff means though, he's a reasonably good finisher if he gets a chance. He just doesn't get many chances because his movement etc is rubbish.

well tbf I can't really remember the last chance he had to back it up or disprove it.

I genuinely think it might have been the equaliser v Spurs??
