An upgrade would be someone to challenge DCL for a starting place, all we have done is fill a number so we can have a bench. Fair enough we need a bench.

He needs to play well, either to stay or to get himself a big payday elsewhere, so he'll certainly be motivated.
Agree with this it's a no brained, at least a king gives us a bit of what our team needs ...pace and given time he should chip in with a few goals. It's a great deal, apparently we were at the limit with FFP, we have got rid of a few non contributors, slugs who clogged our bench and given some of our promising kids, loans were they will actually, play and get experience. If King contributes nothing we let him go simples. No one can accuse Moshiri of not backing managers at Everton, but obviously we were restricted here by FFP and had to get rid of deadwood before we brought in, we are paying now for Moshiri backing managers too much.

1. we needed able cover for DCL either way - so that's a box checked right off the bat;
2. he'll fulfil a role as a second striker whilst he's here and is flexible along the front, as well as come in for DCL when the time requires it. He isn't just here to 'fill a number', he'll deffo be utilised regularly. You're well underestimating his quality.

I hope I am really underestimating his quality, I genuinely hope he smashes it, not convinced though, I understand it's a weird situation with covid etc but at the same time an opportunity has presented itself that wasn't expected, we've let it slip in my opinion.

Think some people are being a bit harsh here. I'm happy enough with King but it's not a no brainer. I think he offers us something a bit different to what we had, and fits in to the team set up pretty well, so i'm looking at the positives. I don't think it's ridiculous to say that it's not a good signing or that he doesn't improve the side though. We don't all have to think everything the club does is wonderful.
How could we do that with FFP restrictions, no one wanted to buy the absolute dross on our bench, so where does the finance come from ? We have at the very least lowered our wage bill and brought in an experienced striker/ winger who has what our team desperately needs pace, for very little money on a short term deal.

Josh King is an ok player. Cenk Tosun is not an ok player. Clear upgrade on the squad. I'd wager I) King will be motivated to show that he can compete for Richy or DCL's spot; and II) that in turn he will motivate DCL and Richy to show that he can't.
IMHO that is the ideal winter signing. You don't want to upset the first 11 if you can help it. DCL and Richy have looked a little off the pace, a little frustrated, a little low in quality in the last month or two. A new face to push the boys a bit harder to prove their worth is just what we want.
I actually think Josh King has the quality/technique to get a bit of game time and do alright with it. Not even arsed that he's been crap in the champs this year. Last year of the contract and clearly not motivated. Let's hope Big Dunc will get him on the straight and narrow.
