Roberto Martinez was an honourable guy and a man of principle but he didn’t deliver, says former Everton midfielder Peter Reid via Daily Mail

David Unsworth to join former manager for Norwich game

Everton have confirmed that former manager Joe Royle and former player David Unsworth will take charge of the Toffees for Sunday's final game of the season against Norwich following Roberto Martinez 's sacking earlier today.

For Royle it will be a return to the Everton dugout 19 years since he left the club in controversial circumstances at the back end of the 1996-97 season.

He will be joined by Academy boss Unsworth, who won the FA Cup under Royle's management in 1995.

Royle returned to the club in 2014 as the Professional Development Coordinator while Unsworth rejoined the club as U21 assistant the previous year, eventually succeeding Alan Stubbs as manager of the U21 side. Under Unsworth this season, the junior Blues finished third in the U21 Premier League.

The temporary management duo will also hold Friday's pre-match press conference at Finch Farm ahead of the Norwich game.

Meanwhile the Liverpool Echo is reporting that Martinez's backroom team will also follow the Spaniard out of the Goodison exit door. Assistant Graeme Jones, coaches Dennis Lawrence, Inaki Bergara and chief scout Kevin Reeves will also leave the club and won't be on the dugout at Goodison on Sunday.

13 May 1935: Football League team wins 10-2 in a charity match for the King’s Jubilee trust fund

Football League 10, Irish and Welsh 2

What’s in a name? A great deal in football, it seems. A regrettably thin crowd went to Goodison Park, Liverpool, on Saturday to see two fine teams play a most entertaining match for the King’s Jubilee Trust Fund. Had these teams been labelled “Liverpool” and “Everton” and the match been called “F.A. Cup, sixth-round tie,” the ground would hardly have held the people eager to see it.

Everton Football Club regrets to announce that Roberto Martinez has left his position as First Team Manager with immediate effect.

The Chairman and the Board of Directors would like to place on record their thanks for the dedication and commitment Roberto has shown during his three seasons with the Club. Roberto has been a great ambassador for the Club, conducting himself, at all times, with the utmost integrity and dignity. He secured the Club its highest ever Premier League points total, a place in the last 16 of the Europa League and appearances in both domestic cup semi-finals. He has also played a key role in the development of several young players, managing their progression to the Everton First Team and International honours.

After three seasons in charge, Roberto Martinez has been relieved of his duties as manager of Everton FC effective immediately.

The club have yet to officially announce the decision but Sky Sports News HQ say Martinez has now left the club. Speculation had mounted about the Spaniard's future at Goodison Park over the past few months. There was also the matter of sorting out the repercussions of terminating a contract that had three years left on a reported £4m-a-year deal.

Rumors came to head at the end of April as an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Liverpool was followed by a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup Semifinal. Coupled with a semi-final loss in the League Cup and a second consecutive lower mid-table finish, it was enough to cost Martinez his job.

The club had hoped to wait until the end of the season to make a decision regarding Martinez's future, but further limp defeats to Leicester and Sunderland, as well as the threat of further fan protests, have forced their hand.

With the club having failed to make the top half for two consecutive years with what is widely regarded as a squad with plenty of potential, many felt it was time for a change and the new owner Farhad Moshiri thankfully agreed. Despite having a marginal better win percentage than David Moyes, the past two years under Martinez have been problematic for the club and the squad has not capitalized on the significant investment made in players like Romelu Lukaku and James McCarthy.

Ultimately Roberto Martinez's tenure provided a glimpse of two different futures for Everton. One is a continued upward trajectory that started under David Moyes. Competition for a Champions League place through vibrant attacking soccer. With young players like Lukaku and Ross Barkley it seemed like Everton could do anything. The future was what became his downfall. Brilliant attacking soccer that could not withstand a defense that leaked worse than a cardboard bathtub. Players playing without any confidence or understanding of what to do, and eventually they played without confidence in their manager.

For Everton the future is in the air. The club will have an excellent crop of candidates to pick from with Ajax coach Frank de Boer under consideration along with other names like Rafael Benitez, Manuel Pellegrini, and even David Moyes if rumors are to be believed.

David Moyes would instil grit at Everton but appointing him would be a backwards step… he would not lift the club like Ronald Koeman or Frank de Boer via Daily Mail

EVERTON FAN VIEW: It's not a specialist that's required, but an all-rounder, and somebody who can lift the club. Unlike de Boer and Koeman, Moyes would fall some way short of that.
