Stoke City have enquired about James McCarthy via Royal Blue Mersey

Is McCarthy in Koeman’s midfield plans?

Take it for what it’s worth but the Daily Mail have reported that Stoke City have inquired as to the availability of James McCarthy. With so many midfielders being targeted by new manager Ronald Koeman it leaves the question open as to the future of McCarthy with Everton. Would the arrival of rumored targets Axel Witsel and Juan Mata spell the end of his time in Everton Blue?

His current value would be well above the £13 million Everton paid when he arrived from Wigan three years ago now. His value would also be increased by the five year contract he just signed this past season keeping him at Goodison Park until June of 2020.

While often slotted as a defensive midfielder his best performances with the Toffees clearly came when he was freer to play further forward and fully engage with the attack. Now the question is if he will even get a shot to audition for that role under Koeman.

This is still very early and his departure likely wouldn’t come until the business of bringing in other midfielders is solved first. That said, at 25 years of age he would return a nice sum for Everton to add to the transfer kitty.

Everton reportedly interested in Kerim Frei via Royal Blue Mersey

Former Fulham winger could return to England

According to Turkish sources it looks like Everton maybe trying to add some attacking options by signing Kerim Frei of Besiktas of the Turkish Super Lig. He has some British experience playing for Fulham where he totaled 23 appearances in the Premier League with the Cottagers after spending time at their academy and on loan at Cardiff.

He is only 22 years old and has played 2 seasons in Besiktas since joining them in September of 2013. He is a strong passer with a 86% completion rate last season, but overall seems like a potential bench player for Everton. He scored 5 goals in 37 appearances for his side in all competitions at an attacking left wing position. He mainly plays a left wing and unless moved that leaves him facing Kevin Mirallas for playing time. Still, it’s better than seeing Tom Cleverley or Arouna Kone shifted wide left.

His strengths are dribbling, passing and through balls, but is weak on crosses and defense. That says to me right there he is just a younger Mirallas and until he faces the Premier League again I’m not even sure how close he is. His cost is estimated around £6 million so wouldn’t hurt the transfer budget Ronald Koeman has gotten, but I also wouldn’t think this is the big splash Everton is looking to make either.

The Axel Witsel transfer saga takes a new twist via Royal Blue Mersey

Premier League champions Leicester have emerged as rivals for the signature of Zenit midfielder Axel Witsel.

Witsel is widely expected to leave Zenit this summer but the transfer saga is rapidly descending into farce as various media outlets post conflicting reports about who is in pole position to sign him.

Everton remain keen on Witsel and are able to offer significant wages in order to tempt the Belgium midfielder to sign.

Napoli and Inter Milan have been linked with the former Standard Liege man, though they cannot match Everton’s financial muscle.

Chelsea were also believed to be interested but their imminent signing of N’Golo Kante may take them out of the running.

However, the Kante deal may mean Leicester step up their interest in Witsel as a direct replacement – according to France football.

The Foxes would be able to offer the 27-year-old significant wages and, perhaps crucially, Champions League football.

Witsel is reportedly back from holiday today so the end to this frustrating saga may well be in sight.

But with plenty of options in front of him, it’s difficult to second guess where Witsel will be playing his football next season.
