Everton target goalkeeper Szczesny on loan from Arsenal via Royal Blue Mersey

This comes just days after it was reported that he was headed back to Roma

Everton may soon have their first choice goalkeeper with a report from The Sun saying that Ronald Koeman is attempting to bring in Arsenal and Poland National Team goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesney on a season-long loan.

However, there should be some doubt as to the validity of this claim. The Sun are all alone on this report. Just days ago, it was confirmed by a number of sources that Szczesney was set to go back to Roma this season.

The 26-year-old spent the 2015-16 season with the Italian outfit and, by all accounts, things went fairly well. He played in 42 games for them across all competitions and did enough to be Poland’s number one for this summer’s Euros until he was sidelined with an injury.

If The Sun report is to be believed, there was some sort of hold up in the deal between Roma and Arsenal, leaving Everton a window to sneak in and see if they could tempt Szczesny with the opportunity to stay in the Premier League.

But is that pull greater than the chance to be the starting goalkeeper for a team that will be playing in the UEFA Champions league this season? Roma finished third in Serie A last year, and in doing so qualified for the Champions League play-off round. At Everton, there is no chance of that happening with just a one-year loan.

This is not the first time we have heard Szcznesy linked to Merseyside. Last February, there was talk that he may have been Roberto Martinez’s pick to replace Tim Howard once he moved to MLS. Of course, Koeman is in charge now, but that doesn’t mean the two mean disagree on goalkeeper quality.

If the Toffees could pull this one off, it would be a major addition. Szczesny has had his issues with Arsenal both on and off the pitch, but is a pretty clear upgrade over Joel Robles and Maarten Stekelenburg. It’s almost too good to be true, which means it might not be.
