Everton Pursuing Southampton Captain via Royal Blue Mersey

The Toffees are looking to strengthen their defense with a familiar face for the boss.

Rumors of moves for new players have been surfacing after assistant, Erwin Koeman mentioned that Everton would be active in the transfer market this coming week. The latest rumor involves, go figure, another Southampton player – the captain Jose Fonte.

According to The Daily Record, the Toffees have offered Southampton £9mn for the Portugese international’s services. They are not alone though as the same report also states that Jose Mourinho is considering bringing the player to Manchester United to further strengthen his squad.

Fonte, 32 is coming off of a successful European Championship campaign with Portugal where they beat the host nation France, 1-0 in a fittingly odd finale to an odd tournament. He has been at St. Mary’s since 2010 making 267 appearances for the Saints.

The addition of another defender should help strengthen a back line that was one of the weakest in the Premier League last season. It also may be a sign that new manager, Ronald Koeman is preparing for the departure of John Stones to Manchester City.

For what it’s worth, Transfermarkt currently has Fonte valued at his highest point ever at £4.25m. A valuable player for the Saints, he is under contract through June, 2018.

It is easy to draw several connections between Koeman and players from Southampton to positions of need in Everton’s squad. Are all those moves going to happen? Likely not but it’s understandable that the new boss would look to bring in players that he’s already comfortable with and who understand the system that he runs.

What are your thoughts on Fonte? Have your say in the comments section below.

Everton assistant hints at a “busy” week of transfers ahead via Royal Blue Mersey

Erwin Koeman discussed some of the happenings around Goodison Park

Erwin Koeman, Everton’s assistant head coach and older brother of Toffees head man Ronald Koeman told the Liverpool Echo on Sunday that “Ronald and the board are very busy with (transfers)”

So far, it has been a summer heavy on rumors for the Blues but light on actual signings. Since being appointed the manager on June 14, the only first team signing for Everton has been goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, a player who isn’t even the clear first choice netminder at this point.

Regardless of the moves off the field, the assistant Koeman said the coaching staff expects the players currently on the team should be ready when they open the Premier League season against Tottenham on August 13.

“We can talk about a lot of things,” Koeman said. “But in two weeks, the league starts and we have to be ready”

“Not one team in the Premier League is ready for the moment. In two weeks, the circus will start”

He also touched on how the team is dealing with the change of playing style with his brother now in charge.

“They are used to playing of the way of Martinez and now we have to play the way Ronald likes,” he said. “That is not always easy…Of course you have some players who start late. It takes time but we know in two weeks we have to perform.”

Things may start falling into place soon. More concrete rumors are swirling lately. It is seeming more and more likely that both Romelu Lukaku and John Stones make their exit, while some less expensive players like Idrissa Gueye and Ashley Williams come into the fold. As always, we will believe it when we see it.

Everton in discussions to sign Swansea’s Williams for £10 million via Royal Blue Mersey

The Swans captain would bring a veteran presence to Merseyside.

Everton have their eye on Swansea City and Wales National Team defender Ashley Williams but have yet to make a bid, according to multiple reports.

Yesterday, The Mirror reported that Everton and Swansea had agreed to a £10 million deal. Today, The Liverpool Echo have confirmed the Blues interest in the center back, but say that no agreement is in place. Adding to that, The Daily Star are saying that the Merseyside club may face competition from Arsenal for Williams’ signature. So, this seems to be far from finished.

The signing of Swansea’s skipper would be significant for Everton, who look poised to lose John Stones to Manchester City any day now. Williams is a proven Premier League quality defender who would command respect in a locker room that, at times, seems to lack discipline. Not to mention the number of young Blues who could learn from him, including the likes of Brendon Galloway, Matthew Pennington and Jonjoe Kenny.

As you can see from the statistics above, Williams is more of hard-nosed, no nonsense defender. His number of clearances dwarfs that of Stones and he also goes in for more tackles than the young England man. If this rumor comes to fruition, fans would be hard-pressed to view the move as negative. It is an affordable and safe, albeit remarkably un-flashy signing.

That said, it does not seem that bringing in Williams would stop Everton from getting a younger and more expensive center back like the oft-rumored Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli. Williams and Phil Jagielka will turn 32 and 34 years old, respectively, in August. The only other senior center back the team has is Ramiro Funes Mori if Stones leaves. Mo Besic and Gareth Barry could both do a job back there, but in reality, the Toffees would need at least one more central defender to give them sufficient depth heading into the season.
