Transfer Rumour Everton poised to make £25m bid for Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney

Neither Robinson nor Connolly 'proved themselves at Championship level". Both had ups and downs, both spent time out of the team. Connolly started out great and then fell out of favour somewhat (bit like Dowell). Robinson had some early games with dreadful coverage mistakes but seemed to improve towards the end of the season.

In other words, things turned out exactly the way you would expect with young lads on their first loan at a competitive level and they all gained some welcome experience. Maybe one or two of them (Joe Williams never seems to get mentioned here from the loanees but probably got the most experience) may break through. Maybe the positions they might play are too competitive within the squad (left back, central midfield). Maybe they experience an unlucky injury or the player in front of them does which opens the chance for them. But none of them are - yet - in the position where we should say 'play them'.

..you’re certainly the person who knows best. I suppose it’s down to the definition of ‘proving themselves’. For me, both had regular game time at that level, they were not discarded. Both played in key games, especially Robinson at the end of the season when Bolton faced relegation. For me, they both proved they can play at that level. Yes, there were dips in form but both were playing open-age football for the first time.

It has to get to a point where we use them or sell them, otherwise the squad becomes massive. They also block the progress of the next bunch coming through.

Any actual evidence that we're after him or just all based on newspaper speculation with no quotes, evidence or anything at all?

Some of those weren’t necessary though especially the Baines one. Rodwell on the wing was poor as well given the options we had. I don’t think anyone would mind a bit of creativity in an injury crisis. I just don’t fully buy into ‘what if x player gets injured’ fear. If Kane goes down Spurs are sunk, if Lukaku went United would be, same for Salah. No top club can lose key players for a long period and not be impacted. We can’t have a squad of 22 top players. So if we get Tierney we don’t have to keep Baines on the bench just in case he gets injured. If Baines wants football and we get a good offer for him then why couldn’t we have Tierney as first choice and youth players as back up.
Yeah that’s fair enough. Personally I would rather have the experience of someone like Baines in the squad, particularly because you don’t know how tierney would handle the step up to begin with, but I understand your point.

For me, I would think of a game like the semi at Wembley a couple of years ago where we tried to be creative with besic at right back. It failed, badly. A right back equivalent of Baines could have made all the difference there, so I wouldn’t like to throw the baby out with the bath water if we don’t have to.

Why are we constantly trying to diss other clubs. We are Everton, surely we are better than that.

No one in their right mind can call Celtic a small club. They may operate in a poor league, but they and Rangers are massively supported and would run any EPL club close given the finance and longevity of guaranteed funds a Ell team has they would do well.

Not with current sqyuad, but given funds and their home support, they'd do fine.

...somebody else would be prepared to pay it, especially considering the reasonable transfer fee. It’s only a poor deal if the lad turns out to be poor. If that is the case you can then blame Brands.

And hearin if true we can see the blueprint for the club, buy in the best young take on deals which initially help to control the wages at the club, but with an escalation as they mature which makes those deals incredibly attractive to the player, agents and protect the investment should they develop.

Can see anyone coming in under the age of 24 being in similar escalating pay deals also (Lozano etc).

Shows the club (brands) has a very clear idea and 'plan' of how to progress.

I agree with you and I suppose I was reacting to some posts which seemed to assume Robinson would be a suitable choice for the first team LB slot based on a couple of good games for the national team and his best performances in the Championship.

If you look at the left back position, as we may be with Tierney, you have:

* an older more experienced but less attacking Baines
* a squad utility player in Martina
* Garbutt now out on loan
* Galloway with first team experience and coming off a run of poor loans
* Robinson with Championship experience
* Connolly with Championship experience
* Foulds not making progress at U23
* Gibson (Lewis) making good strides in youth team

That's a lot of players to fight your way through and if Tierney comes in then the 'open' position becomes more closed.
