Wayne Rooney has an offer to return to
Manchester United as an ambassador, despite his move to
Everton.
The club’s all-time leading scorer has an open invitation to take up the new role when he eventually retires.
As part of the negotiations for
Rooney's last United contract - signed in 2014 - an agreement was made with agent Paul Stretford that would see the striker handed an honorary role, similar to the one taken up by Sir Alex Ferguson.
But while former manager Ferguson is believed to earn in the region of £2m-year in his position, it is not known how much Rooney would be paid.
Other ambassadors can expect to earn closer to £100,000-a-year.
United are not contractually obliged to make Rooney an ambassador - but it is understood an offer is in place.
