From memory him getting injured is when it went a bit tits up for Carlo too

I think so too. But I'd say it was more pronounced with Benitez. I think Carlo rn out of ideas, and Doucoure would cover for James. I think for Benitez, the team was set up for Doucoure to have that freedom to run from midfield, and then finish games in the 10. People were talking about him being the best CM in the league at the start of the season, and when he went we just had nobody to carry the ball in transition, and nobody to get beyond/up to Calvert Lewin, with Benitez being too headstrong/stubborn to adjust system.

The flip of it is, if you get Doucoure right, he is quite a unique player. I'm not saying he's wonderful, but he carries the ball well and wins it back a lot.

Leaves us a big name spare wouldnt it. @catcherintherye @bluestevon

Very hard to get the blend and be inclusive. Don’t think Doucoure is a 6, but I think he gives so much he needs to play.

It's a really tough one, and that's me being honest.

How rugged is Zinchenko? How much defensive work could Doucoure get through in an 8? Will Alli contribute anything defensively if he gets a run? They are all open questions that could gave a positive answer, but if I was a betting man I'd say we would be quite open.

That being said, Gordon is very good defensively as a wide man, and Gray does ok defensively now too.

How do think this would balance mate:

Dele- Zinchenko-Doucoure.

Think we need to loose a few bodies in the engine room, Gomes & Gbamin.
That's a #10 bordering on a forward, an "8" who does a bad #10 impression and a real #8 who is more useful with the ball than without it. Or put another way we're going to leave our backline even more exposed than last year potentially.

My answers to the questions are enough with the right partners, not much, and no.

He should do that mate, Zinchenko is way better than a peak Delph imo.

I see Dacoure starting for us next season, think we won't be able to bring in a whole new midfield and at his best Dacoure is very good (just not so much when alongside someone who can't run) he just isn't ever a player whose gonna be a good distributor though so important he's sorry need by 1-2 who can do that.
At his best Doucoure won't get us relegated

If I were to hedge, I would be inclined to agree with you.

Lampard didn't seem to know how to get the best from Doucoure, in a way that Benitez did at the start of the season.
The best way to use Doucoure is by asking him to do nothing in the middle third. This is genuinely what Rafael did. You can see why it is a problematic approach I think.

Again, I dont understand this shout, we buy plenty of players from overseas.

The last 3 years, for example.

We signed 24 players.

12 were from overseas and the 12 we signed from this country have probably made more of an impact.
Of those we’ve signed from overseas, how many did we bring because they’d worked with our managers? James, Allan, and Rondon off the top of my head? Then you have Olsen who was a simple loan as a backup keeper. Gray we’d clearly known since Leicester. The only one I can think of in the last couple years where we spent real money on a player abroad we seemingly found without prior connections was Myko. Who am I forgetting?

I would probably go along with that. Or ask him to run very quickly forward with the ball through the middle third anyway!

But these are 2 different things mate.

Do I think we should stop signing players our managers want, God yes.

I think the main point is we should be looking at finding more players abroad which we dont just lazily bring in because someone knows them from before. There is talent out there. We just suck at finding it or we’re just not even looking.

We dont look, as I said above, we sign players our managers want and the others we do deals with Agents for players they want a payday on.

So we kinda agree, you think we should look overseas more, whereas I just want us to actually look.

Brands had the right idea with the Vlasic and Lookman deals.

I still firmly believe if he was given free rein he would have made us vastly better, instead he was penis blocked at every chance.

And if the ownership changes, or the composition of the board changes, hopefully the DOF is able to do that job.

The issue of it is though, is with these more unknown, foreign players, is you will need time for them to bed in and stability as a club to allow their edges to be straightened. As a club, we have to make sure we dont go down, so some pragmatism is required in recruitment, and we are trying to get that stability with the manager.

Its partially why, when people are against guys like McNeil, at the right price I'm open to it. He gets around 3 goals and 3 assist a season, as a young player, in a poor Burnley team. In a better team, as he gets a bit older, he might double those numbers, and give some defensive contribution. Not outstanding, but solid.
