Wait people would actually be ok with Townsend?

Just one of them for me mate, we do need a squad with different options and I would honestly take the Aaron Lennon we signed a few years back over pretty much all of our wide options ATM (not including Richarlison).

Free transfer, has pace, which we desperately need. It would be incredibly underwhelming if we weren't in the market for another winger/wide forward still though.

Basically as things stand I would happily wave goodbye to Bernard and replace him with Townsend as the latter will tangibly affect games for us more given Bernard, despite his better ability, is like a go kart in a monster truck ring.

Sell: Tosun, Iwobi, Sigurdsson, Bernard.

If we brought in Townsend, sold those 4 and used the money on a starting right sided player plus a youngster as backup to James then it makes sense.

Huge wages saved and perhaps £30mil in fees to put towards the new players.

I don’t like it. But if he is actually free, I can live with it as we will need somebody that actually provides a threat and while Townsend is wildly inconsistent he is capable of the spectacular which is something we horribly lack. We need to bring in an actual starter though for his position.

..…I thought Lennon was very ordinary. Sometimes busy players deceive and he deceived. Ran around lots chasing the ball, failed to pick up his runners and offered virtually nothing from a goal threat or creativity perspective. Townsend is underwhelming but superior to Lennon.

I said (semi) jokingly to my mate that we’d sign Townsend, after I saw his name on the released list at Palace. I don’t know what’s more depressing:

a) I can see it actually happening
b) He’s poo
c) He’d probably be our best winger
