Everton Summer transfers 2021

Yep very fair - can you imagine the excuses from the Cult of Carlo had we barely spent anything this summer!

"Carlo Fantastico M8"

"Needs his own players"

Yet the same folk will no doubt be hounding Benitez for not turning Iwobi and Coleman into world class players.
We should have got David Copperfield in as manager, he probably could have done this.

We aren’t a tolerant or patient fan base in fact we are the polar opposite of that, add to the fact who our new manager is he will not get any leeway from the Goodison faithful regardless of FFP
The case against Benitez will be weakened by any lack of funds coming his way in the summer.

I'm really not arsed if he's here or not. I dont have an axe to grind. But my expectations of his first season target would drop from 6th to 8th if he is well backed to midtable if he isn't.

The board, more importantly, would cut him a lot of slack too.

Common sense.

Those wanting Benitez out should be hoping he's allowed to spend as much as his predecessors or they'll never get their wish in the coming 12 to 18 months.

If FFP is a major issue this summer, it means one thing for me: we cant be judging Benitez by the same criteria we've judged managers since Moshiri came in 5 years ago when he allowed them major cash. We'd have to judge Benitez on the basis he's a man working with many players he doesn't particulary want. That would have to ratchet down expectations vis-a-vis where we finish in the table and how many points we rack up.

That's just fair.
It is.
At some point the huge FFP problem has to be addressed. It might be done with a combination of player sales and creative sponsorship.

If these rumours are true, it does point to much tighter restrictions and operating in a different market. I wondered if Benitez was seen as someone who could do that. Carlo certainly couldn’t.

If FFP is wrecking us this summer, I'd sell Pickford and Richarlison and hope for a commerical deal to top that up then hand it to Benitez.

That'd get us the best part of £150M.

Part of me thinks Benitez has come in because there isnt much to spend and he worked quite well at Newvastle under the same constraints.

Shame as the money we have spent already has bern completely wasted

Its one thing to look at certainly mate, but on the other hand there is more to football management then just the players bought and available.

For example look at Tuchel, he came in and won the CL with the same players Lampard was struggling to string two results together with, equally Ranieri came in and won the title with essentially and largely the same squad of players at Leicester who were nearly relegated with Pearson the year before.

Yes its a boost having a war chest and some mitigation if he isn't given any means, but judging wholly on finance to weigh his contribution i think is to narrow. Thats my logical brain speaking.

My emotional brain doesn't want him anywhere near our football club anyway. So im totally biased. lol

Yes, this is my analysis too. People need to accept that a large swathe of the fanbase is effectively "Switzerland" when it comes to Benitez. They simply want a successful side. These neutrals are pretty silent and non-committal about him either way. These people will break one way or the other when it becomes clear what direction this train is traveling. If Benitez is not backed in the summer in any meaningful way, moderate reasonable people will begin to lower their expectations, such as they already are. You don't have to like a manager to know that he is being blackguarded. It kept David Moyes in a job for a decade.

That said, I still think he'll be backed. If he is, that will be the most perilous time for him. Given Marcel Brands's record, I could see Benitez trying to force Brands out of any key decisions for fear of any more Iwobi-type signings. There's big scope for major friction this summer.
