If he has no decent net spend how do we compare any expectations we might have from him with the expectations we had (which were dashed) of our big spending managers?

A simple but logical point that cant be gainsaid with a gif.

If he does come in townsend hopefully club atleast do a deal similar to king and be smart one yr with option of a second. Dont really want him here still want us to go out and get a quality wide player. Gives us the chance to send gordon out on loan again. Still need to get others out of the door

Yes, this is my analysis too. People need to accept that a large swathe of the fanbase is effectively "Switzerland" when it comes to Benitez. They simply want a successful side. These neutrals are pretty silent and non-committal about him either way. These people will break one way or the other when it becomes clear what direction this train is traveling. If Benitez is not backed in the summer in any meaningful way, moderate reasonable people will begin to lower their expectations, such as they already are. You don't have to like a manager to know that he is being blackguarded. It kept David Moyes in a job for a decade.

That said, I still think he'll be backed. If he is, that will be the most perilous time for him. Given Marcel Brands's record, I could see Benitez trying to force Brands out of any key decisions for fear of any more Iwobi-type signings. There's big scope for major friction this summer.
Spot on.

There'll be a hard core of people who'll ignore the lack of spending (relative to what's gone) and seek to undermine Benitez. But for most, if they see a manager selling to buy and struggling, they'll cut them some slack until such a point that they are backed substantially.

And yes, I can see a lot of turmoil with Brands - a man who really shouldn't be here and one who can only do more harm than good now.

Don’t want Townsend at all but if he’s just a replacement on the bench for bernard then it makes sense, better player at less than half the wages and free. That said I’d only be fine with it if it means we’re using the money we have to bring in a starting RB, CB, CM, and a player to play across the front three.

Doing the above and moving players like Coleman, Gomes, sig, keane etc to the bench means we’ll have a better bench and better starting 11. Next season sell the bench players if we can’t this season and improve the first 11 and bench again as unfortunately we can’t just go out and buy a new squad.

Would this be the train you are referring to?

The squad is cratered. Running on fumes. Just as it was when Martinez came in. Martinez played a different way and rejuvenated the squad he inherited. Benitez's way is to not be expanisive, so we wont see that.
I never said we would. Just saying the quad only need a couple of positions filling to be as good that squad under Martinez.

I also think we need a different manager to Benitez but e were talking about the squad not the manager.

Money ball by buying yet more over the hill players on big wages that we can't shift? That isn't money ball, that's trash ball.

As for RB regardless of budget, he gets judged like every other manager for me. Has to be in the fight for Europe minimum.

The quality needs to be there though, not just bringing in a couple or so players on the cheap.

I think Benitez will get results regardless. But if he doesn;'t and we haven't spent on quality my expectations of his task shift downwards.

I think most other's would too.

No mate, whateevr about Begovic who is a decent keeper, Townsend shouldn't even be given a comp ticket for one of our games.

If you have serious ambitions to compete for CL place, you cant look at your bench and see Townsend as a viable option to come on and influence a game. Is there another club who we viably want to compete with who would see him as a legitimate option, no. That tells us all we need know.

Townsend is absolutely gash… if we signed him we would literally be replacing bolasie with another palace winger that offers nothing but pace and he will be sitting here for years with us u ale to sell him …

I think we will have money, maybe not fortunes but we will have some. It wouid make no sense for Rafael to take the job on sell to buy or Moshiri/usmanov getting a guy in, half the fan base don’t want, then not backing him.

Liverpool paid 4mil down for jota last summer and you see a lot of teams. Buying on loan and then paying for them the following summer. Surely we should be looking at deals like this if we’re cash strapped.

Rafael I think tends to play 4231. So James who can play 10 or right siggurdsson can play in the 10. That’s if they stay. We have options in midfield.

So it’s basically a new wide player who’s quality. Not Townsend. And then maybe a quality back up for Richarlison/DCL. So With James we then have 5 options for the front 5 positions. Then I don’t mind if Townsend is 6th choice. He’s not good enough to be 4th choice and Gordon 7th. If we sell iwobi.

But if he’s a free I’d rather wait till nearer the deadline. I think we could get a much better player as a free or a loan. A lot of teams will be trying to cut there costs
