Signing Townsend would be an utter indictment of whatever scouting system we have in place. Would be another awful reflection on Brands. Surely we should be after young prospects.
I understand the bind Benitez is in, and he may feel we have to have some depth at least, considering the paucity of the options off the bench.
On a free it's tolerable, if it's added to with a few signings that could objectively go straight in and improve us.
It's maybe a sign though that this is the market we are in, unless we can shift out one or two for decent fees.
I'm expecting another one of these helter-skelter deadline days this year, and if we are getting players in before then, it will be of the free/cheap squad-padding variety.
Mind you, some of our lot have been about as effective as traffic cones on the pitch, and I'd wager we'd get more from Townsend than we ever have or would from Gomes, Iwobi, or Delph. The bigger issue is having to pay their ransom wages each week.
