Signing Townsend would be an utter indictment of whatever scouting system we have in place. Would be another awful reflection on Brands. Surely we should be after young prospects.

I understand the bind Benitez is in, and he may feel we have to have some depth at least, considering the paucity of the options off the bench.

On a free it's tolerable, if it's added to with a few signings that could objectively go straight in and improve us.

It's maybe a sign though that this is the market we are in, unless we can shift out one or two for decent fees.

I'm expecting another one of these helter-skelter deadline days this year, and if we are getting players in before then, it will be of the free/cheap squad-padding variety.

Mind you, some of our lot have been about as effective as traffic cones on the pitch, and I'd wager we'd get more from Townsend than we ever have or would from Gomes, Iwobi, or Delph. The bigger issue is having to pay their ransom wages each week.

Not many thought Cuco Martina was a shrewd signing. He was third choice at Southampton. Townsend was a starter last season and got five assists to his name. It’s not the same, and Townsend will have a much better impact than Martina because he’s a much better player.

zaha is probably the mostly highly rated player I can remeber them having and he’s not anywhere near as good as people on here make him out to be

As a player (not compared to who you might like to sign / think you should be signing)
Honest, hardworking grafter, full of energy (although not as quick as he was) good crosser, gets up and down and does his job defensively.
I would prefer to keep him. We seem to be ditching him and going after Lookman who seems to have none of the qualities above.
You will get more out of him than Barnard and he will be a positive influence around the place.
Not one for the future but will do a job for you for a couple of seasons.
