Nkounkou never plays and will get frustrated at the lack of opportunities.
He didn’t get a chance when Digne was injured. Godfrey played in his place. We will be looking for a new LB understudy next season.

I have no problem signing up and coming players. My fear is that we will think the position is solved, but Holgate will play when Coleman is injured because he isn’t PL ready.

He is the sort of player I thought Brands was brought in to find, so it feels like actual succession planning, just two years too late.

What sort of player do you think Brands was brought in to find?

Looks another class player from Chelsea’s academy.

fast, direct, great feet, strong.

Chelsea are producing dozens of Premier League/Championship level professional footballers every year, players leave their academy at 18 as grown men. We have 23 year olds being loaned out to League 1 and players like Kenny who are nervous wrecks at 24 and people think our academy is performing acceptably.

….sorry, I don’t really get that. Yes, it’s a massive step up but if this lad is the real deal he’ll be up to it. Coleman is still clearly in the driving seat, Benitez has gone out of his way to say he remains team captain so there is a bit of wiggle room here for the lad to settle.

I actually think Coleman’s biggest problem is his fitness & it’s almost inevitable he’ll be out for games with niggles. The club can plug the gap with Holgate/Godfrey/Kenny but it’s an ideal opportunity for a promising youngster to make the position is own. I don’t get the thinking that he’s not ready, it’s only a matter of whether he’s good enough.

Patterson came into an Old Firm game with no experience and was an outstanding MoM.

I don't see a world where he would leave Rangers to play for the under 23's. Of course-as with any signing you have to earn your way in a bit, and I'm sure it will be advised to him he won't be playing in the 1st week but he will expect to make the position his own and I'm sure that will be the expectation.

Holgate and Godfrey had a bit of a go last season and in honesty didn't nail the position down (despite having some decent games). Godfrey was probably the better of the 2 but I'm sure will want to play at CB while Holgate was a bit up and down. Kenny just isn't big or fast enough for the league at this point.

As you say, Coleman is 32. Whichever way you dissect it it is difficult to play regularly in the PL at that age without getting injuries or needing rest. So opportunities will come for whoever is the new right back and he will expect to take them.

Rejecting an opening bid is extremely common and is what is known as ‘negotiating’ in the real world.

The thing that got me and made me feel there might be some firm interest in this was the line (something akin to) "Everton and Rangers remain in talks". That is generally not what is put to reputable journalists in situations where a bid is decisively rejected. If you do not want to sell at this point, you just rebuff the offer and say no further talks.

If this deal is to happen, I don't think it will be done for much more than what we are proposing. To be fair to Everton/Brands they generally stick to their value of a player and don't shift much from it. There may be certain sweeteners that can be added to the deal- be it maybe a loan of a player (Gordon, Nkounkou, Brainthwaite, Astley perhaps) sell on % being upped or more milestones.

Perhaps we'll buy him and loan him back if he is one for the future. Problem is, we need a RB now.

The Chelsea academy is a machine - they pay good money to get the best young players from all around so I'm sure it costs them but the results speak for themselves.

Why 2 years late, we still should be buying young players even now. Coleman can still play this season, he been doing well and this lad can get a few games under his belt. I know you want a ready made player to come straight in but the market and money not good for us right now. We still should be buying platers for the future.

Rangers dont want to sell him & Gerrard certainly doesn't... some of the comments on here are unbelievable & not just relating to Paterson.
Sick of spunking £30 million on crap players.. sick of signing players that are past it.. when will Brands start unearthing some young gems.. he's too slow.. he's not good enough... not signing someone else's junk etc
Paterson is a young exciting player with potential to reach an extremely high level & its ridiculous some of the comments from people who have probably never seen him play.
Really struggling to understand what exactly some people expect from the club in terms of incomings.

I know you don`t post much mate, but you`ve been on here for the best part of nine years.

You must`ve realised by now, that some posters are actually clinically insane.

Unsworth doing a great job. He’s won 2 titles don’t you know.

Being serious for a minute it looks like the 23’s are finally changing, with a lot of young players now playing regularly and a lot of the older players being moved on

Not really a art form to see what way the wind is blowing on a subject then take the opposite view and incessantly bang on about it.
That's where I disagree. His prowess at slowly but surely chipping away at even the most experienced of posters until they bite is a niche market.

Look at the last few pages on here: people still don't 'get' Dave and think he's being serious, which truly amazes me. Without Dave, GOT would be a worse place.
