*laughs in Horse Puncher*
Townsend had no club when we signed him
His last club was Palace

There have been successes and failures under him, but it's so much more complicated than a "long term plan". If he was solely responsible for everything that has gone on since got here, then fine, but I'm fairly sure that we'd all agree that he hasn't been the one making managerial appointments and because of that a "long term plan" is borderline impossible.

The thing I do lay at his door is sanctioning some of the bigger deals which have led us into the situation we are in from a financial POV - but if he'd been more prudent, I imagine there'd have been murder on these pages about him not spending
I read the Brands story as somewhat differently... I think it was a bait and switch by Moshiri. He got Brands here with the chance to be in total control as Kenwright became ill and he was to work with Silva who is a fairly low key inexperienced manager (comparatively) - his biggest rival was Unsy! Then came Carlo Ancelotti and the FSW who Moshiri could not resist - strong personalities who are large and in charge. Two wholesale (Dunc excepted) replacements of the backroom staff and we went from spending 30-50M on deadline day to Salomon Rondon on a free, maybe... I think Brands likely would have walked by now but the Board position was a sweetner to make him feel valued and get him to stay. Reality may be he is as screwed as the rest of us.

There was a great old story about him and Richard Dunne.
We had lost 1-0 away in league Cup game somewhere and the two were on the coach laughing. Howard Kendall went mad with them for laughing. The 2 scallywags said to Howard " don't worry boss we will win the second leg " To which Howard was fuming and shouted " There isn't a [Poor language removed] second leg we are out"
I think it was Walter Smith or Archie Knox?

To be devils advocate., from the outside it looks like Brands has been undermined to an extent by having to please incoming managers (ie. Allardyce, Ancelotti, Benitez) and get rid of historic transfers.

His successes have probably been Mina, Godfrey, Digne, Gray.

Gomes was wanted by the fans. Gbamin could be seen as unlucky. Kean was an understandable gamble imo.

Delph was a poor signing.

Iwobi was a very overpriced signing but may not be quite as bad as he is made out.

Iwobi was a consolation after months of work trying to get Zaha.
