Everton Transfer Thread 2016

Sounds boss in theory but Barkley and Mata playing together centrally would make for a grand total of one midfielder with any sort of defensive capability to speak of.

It's not even the one/two defensive mids debate, it's just Mata and Barkley are probably two of the flimsiest midfielders in the league defensively.

Hell though if Koeman reckons it would work, brilliant.
Only need one defensive mid mate

Walsall have a teenager who they rate very highly. Rico Henry, left back and being watched by loads of clubs.

Mentioned him a while ago. Id like us to try and get these u19 internationals at smaller clubs...if we shifted oviedo and added henry we could send one of our young lbs out on loan for 6 months and still have cover.

True enough mate, but in all honesty we have absolutely no idea what formation we will even be playing primarily next season anyway it's all guesswork at this point

One thing for sure though is that Barkley has had pretty much no coaching on anything to do with improving his defensive play the last 3 years, absolutely nothing - think with Koeman he will be expected to do a hell of a lot more of that in games - no matter how hard psychologically it's been for the lad - you can't play an entire career worrying about a challenge that happened to you when 16.

We have only ever seen the Martinez version of Barkley thus far though, so with Koeman working with him day in day out he could literally end up playing any of about 4 positions long term, cm, am or either side of the striker in a 4-3-3 for example, until we give it a bit of time we wont know

If it came to Witsel, Strootman or Schneiderlin who would people prefer?

Strootman mate - but that injury record gives me shivers so if we can only get one cm in this summer would go for Witsel, scheneiderlein is much better IMO as a pure defensive mid - witsel the better all rounder, and strootman is just a beast

Think if we do end up signing Mata then he would be playing centrally off Rom, Deulofeu wide right and Barkley would be playing deeper - WITH a new centre midfielder alongside him (the links with Witsel and Strootman show Koeman is trying to get in a very top quality dominating centre midfielder) - if we go and play a 4-4-1-1 type deal, but he's knows for using several formations through a season as well so his remarks the other day about finding out what Barkleys' natural position is would suggest he could end up playing differently depending how we intend to set up with the new manager

Barkley playing alongisde Strootman or Witsel (or potentially both) will be absolutely massive for his development into the player we all hope he does become, imagine how much he'd learn training with those two and Mata every day...

Agreed

I'd go for Strootman if not for his injury record.

As it is I think Witsel would be the better option, reckon he'd adapt really well to English football too.

Let's just go out and buy both.

Wouldn't be too unhappy with Schneiderlin either mind.
