Everton Transfer Thread 2016

My concern is that if we did sign him, he'd make what I typed above look silly for a few games, but then fade badly and look like a terrible buy after a season or two.

Let's face it, there's a reason he's linked with a move away from United - he generally hadn't made the grade there and is dispensable. He tends to have big eye catching periods of a season, then fade to anonymity for the rest of it.

I mentioned a few days ago, if we get Mata from 2013 form then we would be in business. My sisters husband is a man it'd fan so I will be asking him how he's been at utd as he would have seen him more. The games I've seen him he's been largely anonymous.

Someone else also mentioned on the it her thread, he needs to be played centrally so as not to waste his talents. Where would that leave Ross? Not that his place should be a given because every player needs competition.

I'm going to look a bit silly here, but... I don't want Mata.

Don't get me wrong, he's an good player, but for the money and wages he'd cost he's the wrong age and I don't think good enough to merit the outlay.

Yeah, I know we're bankrolled now, but not infinitely so. We could go out and get two good players for the amount it'd cost to bring in one here. He'd cost at least £30m, probably more, and I just don't rate him that highly. He's rarely the standout player on the pitch, and for what is essentially a flair player who doesn't defend, that's a big problem.

We should look to bully a vulnerable Newcastle into getting Wijnaldum (who has the potential to be better than he was last season, and he was pretty good even then) for around £15m, then use the surplus cash to improve central midfield - McCarthy isn't good enough, Besic unproven and Barry could collapse in form any day now.

We won't get him anyway imo

Well there's also the fact that he's been moved on by Mourinho previously.

You're right, you look very silly. Read it again and it sounds like you're saying Wijnaldum is a better option than Mata

I am, yes. I think he'd offer more versatility to the squad. Mata is just the "sexier" signing, not the more practical one.

It would leave Ross having to up his game and fight for a starting place

I've seen Mata look like one of the best players in the world, then look like a waste of space. Inside the same week.

We need two players for every position, so not concerned about Ross - he needs competition anyway (beyond Leon Osman).

Everton already have loads of "X Factor" attacking players - Deulofeu, Barkley, Mirallas - and what we need is someone technically decent but a workoholic in games where we need to grind out results. Mata is not what we need in my view.

Not that I believe 99% of reports, but I'm pretty underwhelmed with most of the names linked.

Begovic would make a decent goalkeeper.

Mata - I'm 50/50 about. Undoubted ability but I'm always weary of signing players in circumstances like this - where he may see it as a step-down.

Strootman - Unless on loan (unlikely) or for a modest fee it would be a massive gamble with his injury record.

Witsel - again 50/50 and an extended period in Russia won't have been good for his career IMO. At £30 million there must be better value.

Perhaps what seems a whole lifetime of pleading poverty in the transfer market and my general cynicism in middle-age makes me baulk at some of the fees/valuations being bandied about. We won't throw money about I'm sure. Value for money is still of critical importance.

Even with more spending power, I would still prefer us to prioritise lowering the overall age of the squad where the academy players in like-for-like positions are not going to be good enough.

Secondary to that, there is little or no value to be had in the British market. £100M sounds great but a few seconds analysis should dispel any initial euphoria. On a value-for-money basis, we are much more likely to get better bang for our buck looking abroad.

Thirdly, entering a period of expansion and hopefully new stadium development , we have to be conscious of FFP and potentially have to prepare for losing perhaps one player at significant trading profit each season. That brings into focus the whole DOF appointment which I believe is going to be crucial to our setup over the coming years.

I really hope the board prioritise that appointment and get the best candidate available.

To be fair, Wijnaldum in a Newcastle side vs Mata in a Man Utd side last season...

Wijnaldum is a also few years younger.

Wiji is a bit gash, popped up with a few goals but his general play was poor and his work rate is questionable

Do like Wijnaldum. He's not a playmaker though which I believe is what this side has and still needs.

Wijnaldum reminds me of Cahill with his late runs into the box, but whenever he was asked to 'pull the strings' for Newcastle, he couldn't do it.

Definitely a good player though. But i'm not sure the comparison with Mata is entirely a fair one as they're different players?

EDIT: Btw, when I say 'pull the strings', I'm not just meaning assists etc. I mean as in a player who can link play constantly and is always available. Wijnaldum isn't that type, but Mata is
