Ronald Koeman is ready to bolster Everton's goalkeeping options with the signing of Maarten Stekelenburg.

The 33-year-old stopper spent last season under Koeman whilst on loan from Fulham at Southampton and the Blues boss wants to bring him to Goodison.

Fulham are looking to offload the former Roma man and it is believed Everton could strike a deal which sees Stekelenburg move for less than £1m.

Everton goalkeeper issue is Koeman's big call of the summer

Koeman believes the Holland international can provide competition and adequate back-up to the new No1 he is planning to sign this summer.

Stekelenburg joined Fulham in 2013 in a £3m deal but has spent the last two season on loan at Monaco and Southampton and the Championship side are keen to get his reported £25,000-a-week wages off their bill.

The ex-Ajax keeper, who was Holland's first-choice at the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships, was used 25 times by Koeman at Southampton last season, deputising for Fraser Forster.

Everton's new manager first worked with Stekelenburg during his stint as Ajax boss and is now set to be reunited.

The Blues lost the long-serving Tim Howard at the end of the season and with only Joel Robles left as a senior goalkeeper, Koeman told the ECHO: “If you look at the squad you see one goalkeeper.

“You can’t start a season with one goalkeeper.

“But it is not about ‘we need a No2, we need a No3 or we need a No1’.

“No, it is all about numbers of goalkeepers but first of all we need to talk with the people at Everton because I like to hear their opinions because it is important for me to make my decisions.”
