It is very frustrating but in all honesty from what I read I don't think the hold up can really be held as the responsibility of the club. It does look for a variety of reasons we are being delayed for factors that are outside of our control. I would advise people to be more cautious in their criticism. This is not Kenwright waiting for the TV money or a sale to go through, or not being prepared to match the asking price for players. We have bid and had bids accepted but presently players are waiting to see what other options come up for them.
The situation seems to be we have had bids accepted or close to accepted for a number of high profile players. Witsel, Carvalho and Koulibaly to name 3. They are messing us around somewhat or at least waiting for a bigger/more glamorous option to come in. Whatever the ethics of this the concrete reality is that we face being made to wait to a schedule that is outside of our control to complete.
It is fine saying "get it done by day x, the season starts in y days" but with any negotiation what do you do when they don't meet your deadlines is very telling. We currently do not have the sway to be able to just say we are Manchester United you sign by X day or we move on and the player will move on that. This is part of trying to sign players that are in many ways out of our league.
There is little doubt the Pogba stuff is holding stuff up. His transfer would smash the Italian transfer record over twice over. Napoli have also received a huge chunk of cash (again nearly doubling the their transfer record). It is leading to a fluid situation. It is frustrating but United/Juventus aren't going to move the Pogba stuff along any quicker just to suit us. If anything United would slow the process if it could damage a rival.
The alternative we have is we forget going after big names and focus on gettable targets, your Gueye and Robbie Brady's. I think people would be underwhelmed if we did this. I think we will see a bit of a mixed approach, some big names and also some astute buys. However the idea that we can say to Witsel "our season starts in two weeks, sign by tomorrow or we are out" and he is going to be pressured into signing is a fallacy.
We need clubs to start to "blink" and make decisions. Will Juventus sign Witsel. Will they sell Pogba. Will Napoli match our offer for Witsel? Will Napoli sell Koulibaly? If so will he accept a move to Everton over Chelsea? Will Chelsea match our price? In these negotiations it is complex, you rarely want to be the ones blinking first but at some point movement will be done as people want transfers done before the season starts. I can't stress enough though that it's not as simple as just giving someone a deadline and it would be an unwise move if you know they will not agree to your deadline and you will not pull out if they don't, it makes you look very weak.
Common seems happy about the situation. He is not Moyes who's demeanour was very unhappy. I think he appreciates the complexity and is happy to bide his time and work with the squad he has and add as and when we can. Thats what is most important for me. If he was frustrated (as he seemed at Southampton at times) that would worry me far more.
Moshiri seems a patient man and happy to wait to get the right person. He did with Koeman and will probably do the same re Witsel and others. In the bigger picture of a couple of weeks makes little difference.
I would urge people to relax. I appreciate the deals have proven harder than I first thought and probably those who are most supportive of Moshiri first thought. We probably over-estimated our pulling power slightly. As I keep saying though judge the window by September 2nd.
