A world class keeper won't solve the problem of allowing more than 5 shots on target per match. We're leaky defensively -- too many players just switching off at the wrong time. Put De Gea in our squad and we'd certainly be a lot better, but it's a big stretch to say we'd be top 2. The top defensive teams in the league start by not giving up lots of shots, and then generally have a great goalkeeper who doesn't make mistakes on top of that. We don't do either of those things.

How many points has Howard cost us this season that someone like De Gea, or even Robles would not have?

Upwards of 10 definitely, maybe around 15 points. 10-15 points.

If we had 10 more points we would be fifth, back to fourth on goal difference.
If we had 11- 13 more, we would be 4th.
Go all the way and say we had 14-15 more points and we're looking at top of the league.

How 15 points? Take Chelsea away, 3 points in the bag. But no only 1 taken. Bournemouth away, what is he doing for the third goal? City at home should've been a point. I'm sure you could look at a lot of our losses or draws and say Howard cost us the win. Yes for a few he saved us, but the majority a better keeper would've won for us.

You're assuming a different keeper would avoid all of the mistakes that Howard made and never make any of his own, though. It doesn't work that way. Even De Gea has had a few bad moments this year.

You may as well claim that if Kone had scored 20 goals by now, we'd be top of the league.

Nothing new, but his attitude is first rate apparently.

Thing is, it is difficult to explain to a UK football audience, (money money money) the different way that Kiev supporters and the club feel about Yarmolenko moving on.

The closest to it from an EFC viewpoint would be if John Stones was home grown, fan, and ace. And moved to Barcelona. After playing in the EL or CL to give us the best chance of not being shown up. There would be a degree of pride that a local lad was honed by us, gave his all, then was rewarded with a move to where he wanted.

Probably doesnt make sense, but that is their mindset. Yarmolenko in the PL reflects well on Kiev.

You mean like if Rooney stayed until he was 26?

And what we are hoping Ross does?

Yeah I can see why you think we wouldn't "understand"

It's not just Howard's individual mistakes that are the problem - because he doesn't come off his line, the defence are constantly nervous about any ball sent in just behind them, so they can't push up and be decisive in their play.

Howard is the root of everything wrong with our back line.
Except that's not how we concede goals. We concede goals when our defenders switch off and forget to track a runner or don't challenge a header. What would that have to do with being nervous about Howard? Lack of concentration has nothing to do with being nervous -- if anything, being worried about your goalkeeper should make you extra conscious of making sure you stay tight to your man, something our defenders keep forgetting.
