This will sound strange, but they also produce players who look quite marketable as well. They tend to score a lot of goals, attack teams, try to pss the ball etc. All of these things make their players look good, and in honesty show up well for stats guys monitoring football (probably a bit of a loophole).

They are well set up to market, advertise and sell on players. Where they got lost was they never really did that. They held a squad together.

When Wilson was linked to Chelsea, rather than being ridiculous and wanting 60+ they should have taken 45-50. Sme with Josh King and us valuing him at 50. They'd done their job and should have turned players over.

Just look at Wilsons goal record though, and compare it to Tosuns. Thats why one is going for £20m and one can't be given away.
Well they are decent players in their own right, I can see why they go for the prices they do (as much as you ever can with football prices). I more meant why we can't get the same fees for our unwanted players. If Tosun was on £40k a week you'd probably be able to sell him for £15m, but not if he's on double that. Same with Sigurdsson, for all his faults there'd definitely be plenty of teams who'd have him, but the overall package would be too expensive.

It becomes messy where a player has more than a year as well doesn't it. I mean I know clubs part pay wages, but I'd imagine on both players, the fees they would generate would probably be close to being swallowed up by what we'd have to part pay them over a 2 year period.

The simple truth is, if you buy badly now in the PL you get into a world of trouble.

I should also add, and I don't mean to detract from what has been poor recruitment- but we are not the only ones with this problem.

Liverpool wated to move on Karius, Origi, Shaqiri, Wilson, Grujic and others for decent money this window. None of them have gone thus far. The plan was to do the same with Lallana and Wijnaldum. They're haggling over a 15m for the latter (10m less than they paid) and had to eventually let Lallana see his contract out, after establishing there was no point in renewing his contract another year for a fee as it wouldnt have been coming. Even Lovren they had felt they'd get 30 for, they had to make do with 10, with a large amount based on bonuses and a hefty payment to an agend as well (the guarenteed money is probabaly around 2-3m after that, with some add ons).

They are widely (and in my view rightly) considered one of the well run clubs.

I spoke to a lot of West Ham fans in the summer, and tmheir view was everyone was for sale bar Rice. The problem is, nobody really wants any of their players accept for Rice. It's easy everyone putting their garbage up for sale, but because of the wages there are very little takers. They probably thought someone would come in and pay for Lanzini maybe 20 for Anderson, but you put the wages in too and people are ultimately just going to go down the loan route and probably just pay a portion of the wage. This is why the young lad they've just sold had to go, as West Brom would at least pay a proper fee.

So there's a much wider issue at play here, and yes we have problems too.

If we buy James and Doucoure & sell Delph and Walcott and recoup above half of one of those transfers I will need someone to make sure I've not come to the conclusion I'm in a fantasy dream land.

Someone will also need to warn jessica alba to double up on her security
