Only Kane & Walker they developed mate - the rest were highly rated when they signed.

Dont get me wrong its ideal having a side that knows one another well enough - but a problem with that is things go stale and most Spurs fans would tell you they have been desperate for investment into the side to have continued to push on.
Highly rated and top class aren't the same thing.

It's tough to maintain continuity if you're constantly bringing in older players and shifting them out after maybe three seasons. Part of why Spurs were able to claw their way up to the top is that they had a core team that didn't change for close to four seasons. That matters and is a lot harder to achieve when most of the players will be nearing the end not long after they start.

That's just one of the problems with going after older guys.

In general I agree with you, but I do think in football now people go from season to season essentially. With the ownership we have, and the expectations we have it's hard to think much beyond each season, Have a good season and go from there.

Signing older players means you are signing lads who while they may be at a certain point, are very much on the decline. But in a lot of ways it's a good short cut. The question is, is it the right shortcut, at the right moment, for the right player.

It's odd, but we've had a fair bit of success buying players late 20's and upwards. They've all given good service into their 30's too. You think of Stubbs, Weir, Ferguson, Campbell, Gough, Martyn, Barry etc who all gave great service for a number of years. So it's hard not to try to avoid being too dogmatic on certain judgements.

I'll be honest I'm not a big fan of Willian so he wouldn't be one I went for. I don't think he's miles better than where Bernard could be. But if Carlo does I'm happy ti trust him.

Here you go
33 winger at Napoli

I remember mentioning Callejon in January. If money is a bit tighter or earmarked for other areas it makes some sense. He's probably an upgrade on Walcott, won't be silly wages and may allow Gordon to develop.

The players you all mention, they did well for us, but ultimately won nothing. A few got us fourth once. It's a shortcut to a place we don't want to be. If we can't think in terms of two or three season outlooks, we put a ceiling on ourselves.

I thought you were in remission from Zataraitis?

Showing some key symptoms here lad dont make me get the IV Drip out.
My understanding was always highly rated meant someone who could turn out to be top class, but wasn't yet. Obviously that then meaning top class was someone who was there already.

For example Spurs signed Eriksen who was a highly rated youngster but who hadn't played a game outside of the Eredivisie when they signed him. While there they developed him into a top class player. At the same time Ross Barkley was also highly rated and Everton did not develop him into a top class player.

I think that explains what I mean pretty well.
