Everton Transfer Thread - Summer 2020

Disagree. I think it's fair to say that Holgate established himself last season as a senior player, to the extent that many were calling for him to be part of the England squad. So we have 3 senior CBs to cover 2 positions. Many premier clubs go with that number now and use the youth teams as cover. Right Back however remains a problem. Neither Coleman or Kenny are good enough. Right Back therefore has to be a higher priority than CB for me. Centre mid and right wing I agree with. That's if we get 3 of course.

On this subject, now League 1 is over, can we not get Lewis Gibson back into the fold? I'd give him some games to see if he's ready to cover at this level. What have we to lose apart from financially?

Gibson i believe is still unbeaten at Fleetwood. Hes got 2 playoff games against Wycombe on 3rd and 6th July i think.

If they get promoted then my guess is that he stays there another season and also Connolly is sold to them.

Don’t think we need a centre half for numbers, it’s for quality. I don’t think the ones we have are very good (although holgate will be if he continues with his current trajectory).

I fear today will be a grim reminder of how far away we are from competing, hopefully we can see some youngsters over the next nine games and then rebuild for next season. Shift the deadwood and add two or three players who can improve the first team.

Whose been training with the first team?

Markelo, Simms, John, Gordon, Branthwaite, Baningime

Anyone else?

What I was meaning mate, they had a top class manager readily available when Rodgers left, sadly we hadn’t until Ancelotti came along.
I get that my point was more to the ability of the squad and manager before them. Martinez struck gold with moyes backline and a few additions, come time for leaving only really had lukaku and barkley rest of squad was pish. Koeman got one good year out of barkley, lukaku and an astute buy in gueye then decided to speak like a drunken sailor, BFS is a useless cretin pissed up 50 mil for walcott and cenk tosun, Silva got a pretty good start point with Mina, gueye, gomes, richy, Digne, zooms half decent season then forgot how to football. Poor Carlo inherited a team of absolute fannies and surrender monkeys coming off about 3-4 seasons of very average form and wages spent.

Gnashers had a crap season then got sacked but they still a few critical players to there system and Klopp waiting in the wings is a smooth transition shame both are bellends

...those games will be an interesting watch. Big advantage for Gibson is that he’s left sided. He’s not the quickest, but he looks the type who is competitive and likes to defend.

Its been a horror show to be honest mate in my opinion.

We go on about recruitment and actually slate players but more change is the last thing we need. If i was someone like say Sigurrdson id be reading these pages and thinking ive been here two and half years and had five different managers, playing me in different systems, positions every few months and bringing in new players constantly for me to try and develop a relationship with.

You look at stilted development in the likes of Tom Davies, imagine if he had been working under Carlo for three years, Lookman had all the talent in the world and never kicked on and developed got frustrated and left. Look at Kenny he has thrived away from here this year, would that have happened if he had stayed here for the year - im pretty sure it wouldn't.

Sometimes you have to look inward and be self aware and self reflective as a club and how much the environment of the club has impacted on the team and players as opposed to the players just not performing or developing. The lack of continuity and consistency has been a massive undermining factor both on and off the pitch. Look at the development in DCL in just a short space of time with manager who understands how to get the best out of him.

I have a lot of sympathy for a lot of our players.

Agree with this, but also fear we have missed the moment. When Abramovich and the Shiekh came into Chelsea and Man City respectively recruitment was excellent. Big, big money on fewer key players in key positions that enabed them to progress quickly. Whereas we have been shambolic in that regard - paying over the odds in the £20-40m bracket on so many players we either simply didn't need or not the calibre required to leapfrog our nearest competitors. I don't blame Moshiri - he was naive and we should be thankful for his generosity, but the plan has emerged too late. Maybe the inability to be able to spend big bucks will do us a favour and we will have to go back to the basics of having a world class coach who can hopefully can improve players individually and get them playing to a system as a team. I love the underdog, but I have hated this season, playing second fiddle to Sheff Utd's and Crystal Palace's etc... but all credit to them and their managers, they have shown what can be achieved if you all pull in the same direction.

Chelsea signed 11 first team players in their first summer transfer window, the next summer they signed 8. One of the main problems now is that even an average player costs £20m+. Chelsea signed Crespo for £16m, Robben for £12m, Cech for £7m, Drogba and Essien for £24m etc. Transfer fees have exploded and Chelsea were in a better position than we were at the times of takeovers, both in terms of position and with FFP regulations. I don't think you can compare.

City were similar in that regard.

There's no doubt we have spent poorly though.

....I think Adeniran has been training with the first team for a while. Interesting that he’s been playing right side of late, so I suppose he might get a chance with Walcott out. Not a conventional winger, though.

The exciting thing is that he's gone in there and from day 1 Barton has been praising him. It seems like hes been the 'final piece of the jigsaw' for them to go on this unbeaten run and get into the playoffs.

I imagine Brands and Ancelotti will be taking a look at him now and he may well be in the mix for a squad place next season due to him being left sided as well.

if not, a year in the championship could be ideal for his development.

Definitely of interest are Gordon and Branthwaite. Gordon as him breaking through could add another dimension out wide and Branthwaite simply as were so light and if we sign a centre back we could be able to sell Keane and have him as 4th choice.

John and Adeniran may also be an option on the right with right back and right mid being weak areas.

A few opportunities for these kids now.

I guess the big question is are they good enough... hopefully we'll get the chance to see if one or two of them are.

Big big difference between being good in League One and a top defender in the Premier League.
