Quality dive from Jags though.....

Funny enough...while Vellio and Gueye made an impression...they'll still be dropped back to the ressies when everyone's fit, which could be a shame.

I agree on both counts. Vellios's debut has come earlier than expected but, with Saha out and Anichebe struggling with form and fitness, we're going to have to include him on the bench at least. He set up two goals in the mini derby with his head, which would give us another dimension. I said at the start of the season that Gueye should be making regular cameos throughout the campaign. Virtually every time he plays he seems to either score or create an assist.

Their side was much stronger than ours today. You only had to look at our bench to see how depleted our team is. We gave two players their league debuts today and still matched a team containing a lot of international players.

Not quite satisfied, but it could have been a lot worse with us losing and Liverpool winning at one point.

Up a place (to our highest position this season?) and a point closer to sixth, not at all terrible.

The problem is, I don't think we matched them. I think we bettered them. It's a shame the scoreline doesn't reflect that, and it's a shame bad refereeing decisions had an impact on said scoreline.

You'd just play him for his corners....it was a peach today.

Set-pieces:
Baines
Gueye
Bilya
Osman

Arteta...

haha

We defended well and created chances...but they dominated the possession in large spells and played the better football.

But that was going to happen...we were playing with 6-7 defenders.

Got the prediction right :) our team wasn't the best and against that aston villa team I thought we did great.

My ratings:

Howard - 5 - look shaky a lot
Hibbert - 7 - one amazing diving block, had a run on goal, and put the ball past one defender, then ct back to earn a freekicks. Well played.
Jagielka - 8 - some great tackling and covering of young, and won the penalty
Distin - 8 - I thought with most runs he was great and he add some good challenges
Baines - 7 - felt like he wasn't free to go forward as much

Coleman - 6 - did nothing really
Neville - 7 - nothing special but did a job
Heitinga - 5 - afraid to challenge after getting booked
Osman - 8 - scored but had 2 other great chances and missed...did a lot of running though
Bily - 7 - set up osman with 3 great chances and one was the goal.

Beckford - 3 - had some great chances and he should've scored them all, other than the chances he did nothing else, didn't win a header, didn't get infront of the defender

Guyue - 8 - looked great and set up beckfords chance
Vellios - 7 - won a corner, plus he looks cool.
