I strongly disagree. We took off a striker for a midfielder (McCarthy for Jelavic), and then a defender for midfielder (Stones for Naismith). For a few minutes we were playing a 5-5-0 (unofficially). I was screaming at the tv all of the second half, we really played like Wigan in the second half today I thought. You compare today's game with, say, the 1-0 win over Man U last season, and I would say we were even more conservative today than then.

Can't decide what I think of this post.

Just got back from the game.

Howard - Overall a decent display. That pass in the first half was ****ing awful though.
Coleman - Didn't get forward as much as usual but performed well defensively.
Jags and Distin - Looked very solid.
Baines - Same as Coleman. Very unlucky with that free kick that hit the bar.
Naismith - Probably his best game for us. Worked hard, won everything in the air and scored the winner. Well done to the lid.
Barry - Man of the match by a mile. Excellent debut for us.
Osman - Fcking ****e to start with. Got better as the game went on but I hope that's the last we see of him as a starter.
Mirallas - Decent shift in down the left. Held the ball well up front.
Barkley - Wasn't bad but definitely his weakest performance of the season so far.
Jelavic - Good assist but he's finished

Are you taking the piss?

That is it exactly, and when you compare it to Mourinho's subs - especially the bizarre one of taking Mata off - it looks even better. Also the change in Mirallas was immediate, he looked the sort of player that Suarez would maim again.

Agree. He was a handful today and looked like the player we saw last season.

I missed the first half, but did he play the majority of the game on the left? He always seems to look much more effective cutting in from there.

We were that boss Everton again today.

We won, and didn't scrape it - we deserved it. We were the better side, simple as. End of.

Well in Roberto and the team. Never thought I'd say this, but Naismith MOM for me.

Impressed by Barry too.

Thinking

Lukaku
Pienaar Barkley Mirallas
Barry McCarthy
Baines Distin Jagielka Coleman
Howard

Will be the starting line up for a long time. Gibson has had such bad luck in getting injured whilst 2 new CMs came in, he's going to struggle to get in the team now

Me neither! As soon as Jelavic went off, Mirallas took on the forward role and ran the Chelsea defence ragged.
Obvious bunion wum.

To me that looks his best position - he ran them ragged his pace and the chosen one did us a favour by going gung ho at the end - TH never had a save to make in the 2nd half for all there domination we looked like scoring on the break!

I think Martinez deserves a lot of credit for his tactics today as well. Under Moyes in the same situation I think you'd have defended deep and absorbed the pressure, and we'd have probably broken through. Martinez deployed Mirallas with instructions to pin people back and try to break whenever possible, and it was a huge pressure relief on your team because it kept disrupting our momentum.

This is what Drogba did for us in our numerous meetings with Barcelona in the CL, relieved that pressure. If you let them pin you in the box they'll eventually break through on the law of averages if anything. This is why Barca found it so hard to break us down, while they tore United to pieces. United didn't (or couldn't) try to disrupt the momentum. This was your undoing against us in the FA cup a few years back as well, there just wasn't any relief.

I thought it was a very sophisticated approach and really showed his worth as a manager. It probably meant the difference between a win and a draw today.

Good assessment that mate. I think you've done us a massive favour in loaning us Lukaku, as he's perfect for that role you've just described.
